This cache is located near the new Grand Valley Fire Protection District Station #1, on Battlement Mesa. If you park along the South side of the facility, it’s a short walk to the cache site. The terrain is fairly flat, but not wheelchair friendly :0( Unless your not afraid to go off-roading a little :0)
The Grand Valley Fire Protection District was formed first as the Grand Valley Fire Department in 1962, serving the Town of Grand Valley (now Parachute). In 1963, the Grand Valley Fire Department became the Grand Valley Fire Protection District, serving a community within 320 square miles. The original membership consisted of 20 Volunteers, responding to approximately 30 -50 calls per year. Last year the District responded to 850 calls with a membership of 16 full time staff and 19 part time & Volunteers.

The new GVFPD Station #1 was completed in August 2009. The facility has approximately 33,600’ of usable space, which includes an 8,000 sq. ft apparatus bay, 3,400 sq. ft. public use / training room, District offices, operations area, sleeping quarters, basement storage and training tower. Once you’ve found the cache, you are welcome to come and see the station. I’ve checked with the Fire Chief and he told me to advise cachers to come in the front of the station and ask for the On-Duty Captain to show you around.

The cache site depicts the most common Fire Department fire response – The Single Family Dwelling. This type of fire usually starts as a “room and contents” fire and then spreads through the structure, much like what you see. This cache is dedicated to my younger son CDB who started out his career as a FD Cadet, got on with the BLM as a full-time wildland firefighter and is now working as a full-time FD firefighter/medic. In the fire service, we call this “Living the Dream”.

Geocache #2,953
On a road trip from Iowa to visit the Rocky Mountains, Grand Canyon and a few other national parks, and to grab some caches of course! BigSmile This was a really cool cache, but unfortunately the back door was detached so the hint didn't really apply. Love the setup of this one though!
