This old cabin is below the intersection of the Gravel Pit (Rainbow) trail and the Glen Haven trail. You can hike to it from either trailhead.
Malmberg and Erickson were two Scandanavian families who homesteaded 160-acre parcels on the north side of Crosier Mountain. This cabin dates from the 1890s. They operated a dairy in The Orchard (now known as Piper Meadows) that supplied milk to Estes Park, and later sold that operation to Harry Piper around 1917. This old cabin is thought to belong to Matts Malmberg; it's on what was his land at the time and he was known to be a hunter. However, there is some evidence that it might have belonged to a man called Solomon Hackali.

Some newspaper articles list this as Crosier's cabin, but he lived over in Crosier Park. I believe you can still find his old fireplace if you know where to look. I might put a cache there someday, if I can find it.

Please put the cache back how you found it to keep it less visible to hunters or casual passersby on the trail.

This cache is part of a geotrail of historical caches in the Glen Haven area. Retrieve the code from all 14 caches plus the found date of the virtual and receive a commemorative geocoin. The cache list can be found here: Historic Glen Haven GeoTrail. And remember not to be a cache pirate! If you take something, leave something at least as good for the next cacher.

The cabin is not very noticeable from the trail. We were a few feet from it before we saw it. Love the cache hiding location also!

Took me a while to find this one. Almost abandoned my hunt! But the good news is I was able to explore the cabin and surrounding area. Thanks for the history and the cache.

You really had me going for a while on this one! Finally got a D'uh moment and found it... Thanks for bringing me to this interesting and secluded location - I never would have know this was here, and would have just walked by it on the trail without this cache!

Yesterday I was to go with a group of CMC members on a snowshoe outing near Cameron Pass but we ended up cancelling due to the forecast of bitter cold temps and gusty winds, along with several inches of new snow that would make for poor road conditions. So since I didn't get out yesterday and today's forecast was for 15-20 degrees warmer temps than yesterday and sunshine, I decided to get out and get some exercise. But where should I go to find a snow-friendly cache? Ah yes, Malmberg Cabin, the cache that eluded tinytuttle and me in March!

With Hwy 34 closed, the drive was quite a bit longer than usual but I enjoy hiking this trail and I knew the drive and hike would be worth it even if I dipped again on the cache. When I arrived at the Glen Haven trailhead there was just one car in the parking area. I had brought my snowshoes along but after taking a look at the amount of snow on the ground I decided to just use microspikes. I didn't regret that decision as the snow was only about 6" deep and rarely more than 8".

It was pretty windy on the drive up Hwy 36 but there was only a little breeze at the trailhead. The sun was shining and it was about 15 degrees. I set off up the trail following the fresh tracks and when I got to the junction where one can go right to the ranch, there were four hikers there trying to decide which way to go. They didn't want to go up to Crosier but wanted some views so I suggested Knapp's Knob. They headed that way and I continued up the now trackless trail. I had it all to myself all the way to the cabin.

I arrived at the cabin and with the adjusted coordinates I set about my search. It still took me about 20 minutes and a fair bit of wandering around before I finally found the container. Though we probably should have, I know tinytuttle and I didn't look there before as the original coordinates were closer to the cabin and we concentrated in that area. But I was very happy to find the cache this time! Thanks Path Pacer for luring me to this interesting spot and telling us about its history!!!

I've been by the Malmberg Cabin well more than a dozen times over the years and have gone down to it two or three times in the past. A lot of deterioration occurred between my last visit to the cabin and today. My puppy Orizaba and I had a fine hike up the Rainbow Pit Trail to find this and some other caches I've neglected on Crosier, and found this one fairly quickly. Thanks for it, Path Pacer.
