Cache in the Nook

This Cache is very well hidden, you will need to know how to use a map and compass. Pay attention to certain details in the trail as you progress, they will be of assistance before you complete this sojurn. Knowledge of resections and waypoint projections combined with the ability to measure UTM'S will be very handy to help you bag this one.
When you reach the saddle N 40 24.231 - W 105 17.917 go to CLUE #1, which is aproximately 156.6 deg. for a distance of 528 feet, keep the drainage on your left. The clue is under a cairn of white granite stones in a small tupperware container. There is a good vista to the south from this location.

When you are in the vicinty of the saddle you can start your compass course, on the "GRAY DIAMOND GHOST TRAIL" its legs are as follows:
1. 336.6° .10 mi.
2. 88.1° .02 mi.
3. 92.1° .06 mi.
4. 104.3° .03 mi.
5. 92.0° .11 mi.
6. 95.0° .05 mi.
7. 191.8° .02 mi.

Clue 2 will be at the end of the course.
You will need to find Clue 2 in order to find the real cache. Copy down the coordinates and go to the Cache.

When you get close to the Cache think of the name of the gang that Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid belonged too.

 Hints

On your compass course do not go too far from X 7709. From #2 to X 7709 its 11.8 deg for .02 mi. and 2 is due east of #1. Its in a black and blue container under a flat rock south of a larger rock outcropping, and there is a good vista from there also. If you think of the inverse, and redundancies this will help you. Near this spot on the main trail its 325 deg. to the Christmas tree. There is a large rock in the center of this little drainage. From the cache in the nook near a big tree its 5 deg and 40 ft. to the rock. And my compass is a magnetic tool!!
If you can't find it, at least you will have a good hike with some stupendous views. Good Luck.
If you wish I can send you a map sample of the area that may assist you. Also I did not put the Gray Diamonds there, they are probably from the past, and I have no idea as to where they go.

Hiked Round Mt with Path Pacer. She had the navigation skills needed and I complemented with the geo-senses to discover the 2nd stage and the final. Grand day out.

We thought we might make it to the top of Round Mt today, but the heat and steepness defeated us and we had to be back at the parking lot at a certain time. But we got this one, thanks to my sharp-eyed caching partner! The container is just about shot though, all chewed up around the edges of the lid, although the contents are still dry for now. Thanks!

I had great confusion with this one as I couldn't quite figure out what I was supposed to do. I found Clue #1 easily enough, but #2 eluded me. I tried plotting it from the hint using magnetic bearings corrected for 15 yrs of variation drift. I tried following the ghost trial using true, current mag headings, and headings from 2001. I tried the bearing/range from X7709 in the hint, but that was confusing because it was way too close to the top of the hill where there's another cache located (I found that one, at least!).

After almost an hour of turning in circles and trudging up and down that hill looking for significant rock outcroppings (there are flat stones everywhere), I had to give up.

Another epic cache on round mountain! I've had my eye on this one for three years, but only recently started seriously scheming for how I would find it. Back then I didn't think I'd ever be savvy enough to figure it out, so to finally get this one was hugely gratifying! The "ghost" trail also adds an element of intrigue that I love about this mountain and trail. Thanks very much for this cache. It may be the oldest cache I've ever found!

Thanks for the multi-cache! First, godogsgo and I were off by 100+ft on the compass reading. The hint saved us. after clue 2, Stone mountain was the goal. The final had soooooo many nooks that GDG was about to give up. I checked one more place and I found it. Coords were a bit off, but I can't expect them to be perfect. SL TFTC Took the TBWink

Found with rolltitansroll while on our way up Stone Mountain. The hints helped a lot. Probably wouldn't have found it without them and almost didn't find the final cache with them! Thanks for making our hike more interesting.

Stopped by on way down from the Summit to check on status. Found the cache with a loosen lid so I re-sealed it. Surprised no one had visited in almost a year. This cache should be a "must do" for everyone out there wandering but not lost.

Wow, what a fun cache! This was my primary goal for the day, and I found it with no serious problems. I reviewed the cache page carefully before my hike, and actually plotted coordinates on the computer for each leg of the compass course, to make sure I had a correct understanding of what was going on. I left those coordinates at home though, since I didn't want to ruin my fun.

I found the first clue easily, then started on my compass course. I thought I was doing well, and found plenty of grey diamonds, but got off somehow towards the end, and ended up around 500 feet from clue 2. Luckily the hint method got me there. Clue 2 was very easy to find, as the covering rocks had gotten moved, and the blue container was visible from a distance. I hid it back just like the spoiler photo. The final was in a great spot, that I would like to explore in more detail eventually, but was a bit low on energy for it today.

I was really excited to find the original log book, since I really enjoy the old logs. I sat and read through the whole thing, beginning in 2001 and ending today, with a repeat visit from geofred sometime before I got there. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet him. I added my page of writing, and rehid the cache. This was one of my favorite caches yet, and was glad to be able to complete it on the first try. Left a new TB connected to surveying.
Clue 1, looking good

I see another Tahosa cache

While I was checking on two caches I own near the summit of Sheep Mountain today, my puppy Orizaba and I detoured off our main route a bit to check on the status of the final stage of Gray Diamond Ghost Trail. The cache is in fine condition, and right where it is supposed to be.

I was on Sheep/Round Mountain today and had a chance to check all stages of Gray Diamond Ghost Trail. Everything is in perfect order and ready for future seekers. Have fun with this wonderful sequence, and enjoy the "redundant miles".

This has been one in the making for some time. Cacheman48 and Pixel Magic have been after this cache and others on this mountain for the past two years. This is the year our caching luck has changed for the better. First this year it was Images I, then it was the Chef's Delight, now it is the elusive Gray Diamond Ghost Trail. Woohoo.

The lower trail was clear of ice and snow, but the upper trail had its share of drifted snow and ice that was compacted by hikers. I suspect the warm weather will melt the trail ice pretty soon. Warm weather was promised us by the forecasters and they came through. A huge (miles wide) lenticular cloud was visible all the way from my house in north Fort Collins to the trail head and just hung east of the mountains. It provided us with shade for the entire morning until the winds from the west pushed through to clear the sky and let the sun shine through. That afternoon sunshine and a little luck helped us see the caches that had been invisible to us on previous visits.

We learned that our navigation skills could use some refinement, but we had a blast hiking and searching. I guess earning it the hard way makes us appreciate all the more the value of caches like the Gray Diamond Ghost Trail. Thanks for all the effort you have put into this sport and the good spirit and sense of camaraderie of all the folks who seek out your caches. Thanks to Denali41 and others who have helped keep these caches workable and enjoyable.

Set out with Pixelmagic to finish our quest of finding this great cache. It was a spectacular day, with predictions of being the warmest so far this hiking season. It was overcast most of the morning and a breeze made it very favorable for the hike up the Round Mountain Trail. It was enjoyable noting all the points of other fabulous Tahosa caches as we ascended up the trail. We had a mission to replace the "dressing" stage of "Chef's Special" which we did, so all stages of that cache are now up and running. We did find the final container for "Chef's Special" was missing, but the alternate container we implemented on our last visit was still there. Eagle-eyed Pixelmagic was able to locate Clue 2 in an unconventional way, leading us to believe we were not as prepared for the hunt as we should have been. We made our way back to the final location, and although the vegetation was very much different from the picture provided, the rock formation where the cache was located revealed itself after some searching. The find was an exhilarating moment for us as we had finally passed Tahosa's navigation test. It was also a sad moment knowing that this was the last Tahosa and Son's cache on the Round Mountain Trail we needed to find. The day had grown warmer and there were fewer clouds making the descent down the trail warmer than out trek up. However, it was a great feeling knowing that our mission for the day had been accomplished and Gray Diamond Ghost Trail was now in the "found" column. Thanks Tahosa and Son's for this great adventure and lesson in land navigation. I've given the cache a "favorite" point, but I wish I could give it a thousand! It is so very much a special cache!
