Temple Canyon Scenic Loop: Grape Creek Trail

This is a letterbox hybrid cache. There is a stamp and ink pad in the cache to stamp your personal log book. Please do not take the stamp or pad from the cache. You can either stamp the logbook with your personal stamp or just sign it as you would any other cache.

The posted coordinates are at a trailhead. To get to the actual coordinates follow the trail south for 0.21 mile. There you will see a large boulder close to the trail on your right. From the boulder use your GPSr and project a waypoint 164 feet away at a heading of 186 degrees. There you will see the stone remains of a bridge. The box you seek is under a small juniper tree at the end of the stones (toward the creek).

This trail was once the rail bed for a line that ran from Caņon City to Westcliffe. After twice being washed out by floods the line was abandoned in 1889. I've been told you can follow this trail all the way to Lake DeWeese. That's on my bucket list.

There are restrooms at this trail head. NOTE: AS OF MARCH 20, 2020 THE RESTROOMS ARE CLOSED "UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE."

ALL CACHES IN THIS SERIES ARE IN RELATIVELY REMOTE AREAS. THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE OF COMING INTO CLOSE CONTACT WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

Temple Canyon Scenic Loop is a scenic 15 mile drive through Temple Canyon Park. All caches are along or near Temple Canyon Road (County Road 3). The road is mostly unpaved and can be rough depending on recent weather. Most passenger cars can navigate this road, but there are some rough spots. The road is mostly not plowed when it snows. Cell phone service is nonexistent along much of the route.

You will need to gather clues in caches along the way for coordinates to - TCSL: Temple Overlook in Temple Canyon Park. You can do this series from east to west or west to east without having to backtrack. Going east to west, in Caņon City take First Street south to Temple Canyon Road. Going west to east take County Road 3 south from Parkdale.

You could probably do this series in 2-3 hours, but it is designed to be done at a leisurely pace. Take your time and enjoy the many spectacular views. Pack a lunch. There are picnic tables and restrooms in Temple Canyon Park. Most of the caches require just a short walk on easy to moderate terrain, but some have steep drop offs, loose rocks and lots of cacti.

Saw this series publish last night so decided to get an early start and go down and do some caching. Not an early enough start for any FTFs but had a great time anyway. What a pretty area, never been here before! Traded TBs. Saw a group of fly fishermen down by the water as I went back to the car.
Thanks Room1009 for the fun letterbox cache and really fun series. The variety of hides was great

Got to the parking area and I happened to for the coordinates for a Cache called "The Island." I read the description a little better on what I had to do to find this cache. Once I got to GZ I found the cache pretty quick. Signed the log and traded travel bugs. I hope this cache will stay in place if there are heavy rains in the summer. While I was here I went to to Grape Creek and took some photos. Beautiful area. This one gets a favorite point.
Thanks for the new series of caches.

FTF about 7:00. Great parking and it is kind of cool down here by the river. We really like this trail because it's an easy hike and very beautiful!Approve I've hiked this trail a few times and I never really noticed where this one was hidden. Thanks Geocaching and Room 1009 for bringing us to this cool location! A little scramble to get to the container but was easy to find and log. Signed the FTF spot and we're off to the next one.
