One of the Ghost Town Caches.
Try to imagine a thriving community before you. Churches, schools, hospital, main street, homes, two huge working mines. All located here in this empty, lonely valley.
During the 'strifetorn' days of 1904 thru 1914 there was violence here in various degrees. Seeking a 10% increase in wages, an 8 hour day, a check weigh man to insure honest weight, and the privilege of trading or boarding where they chose, was the demand. Many shots were fired over the years when owners brought in Negro and Chinese strike breakers. So much bad feeling existed between miners and owners that State Milita, from the Ludlow Massacure(where 50 people were killed) was brought in to protect the mines and strike breakers. The miners grouped to form vigilante committees. In April 1914 a mob of 60 men attempted to lynch a strike breaker. Terror spread throughout Colorado and a bill was introduced in Congress that the government take over mining operations. Women and children left town. Schools closed. Miners voted to attack, telephone wires were cut, hundreds of shots were fired during the 36 hour gun battle that raged here, just this seven miles south of Canon City. The mine office and all company houses were ransacked, but no machinery was damaged. From 300 to 1000 striking miners lined these hills. In May labor and management came to an agreement and life began again as normal.

Chandler must have been something to see in its heyday. I knew a man that was born there, Ted Lopez, SR, and he would tell stories about all the things the kids were into. TFTC/SL
