Looking North from near the cache site

updated: 12/20/2015 A great secluded hike that will be very enjoyable for the advanced geocacher looking for a challenge.
At the base of Blodgett Peak I have been hiking this small trail for years and have wanted to put a cache in the configuration I setup sense I started geocaching.

Please know that all the clues are no more than 4-6 feet from the trail, so don't wonder far and be careful on the final, no need to risk your life, but if heights is not in you, then I would not do this cache

Some other notes about this cache:

  • Near leg 3 notice a fork in the trail?  If you want to find forget me not, then take the left fork and you can climb to the ridge and around the bowl to Forget Me Not WWII crash site
  • GPS reception is not good in most of the areas, caching skills will help
  • I would not advise small children or pets on this cache, due to the various cliffs and uncharted trail

What a great cache! I had been out in May to scope the area and snag all of the waypoints. I made it to GZ that day but didn't have the intestinal fortitude to search for the final. Fine by me. So I set out with Gampa today on a rare weekday off to grab the final. The hike to the final was more enjoyable this time, likely because of good company and conversation. I'll take it! Had a few slips and slides along the way but made it to the spot. Gampa was actually the one to spot it and I made the grab. Wonderful! Such a great cache that is well done. And the views are hard to beat. Favorite point. TFTC!

Ever since our DNF in September 2017, we've been anxious to come back to the final coords to conquer our fears and find this cache. So we read the most recent logs, looked at the photo gallery, and then set out this morning with TigerFinder for another look. As we reached GZ the area looked just as daunting but TigerFinder's keen eyes soon spotted something suspicious. We soon had the container in hand and smiles on our faces. We signed the log and remained at GZ for a while to marvel at the views. Thanks to our caching friends who encouraged us to give this one another try, and to the CO for a fun multi and challenging final.

What a wonderful afternoon to get out of work a bit early and hit the trails. I met up with CVA64 at the main parking lot for Blodgett, gathered up some water and snacks and with that we set out on the trail with only 4 caches in sight.

At this final location we were a bit in awe. What a view!!!

On the final approach in my eagerness, I had stepped up the pace a bit and arrived just a few minutes before my companion. I really took in the beauty of this spot and allowed my body to take in some air and re-energize.

I poked around a bit here and there but wasn't seeing what I was thinking I'd be looking for. After a few minutes I heard CVA64 yell out that he found it. Woo hoo!!! I jumped over to where he was and got an immediate scold to stay put where I was! Lol! 2 things... I had a family waiting for me at home, and if I slipped, we'd both be goners! Fair enough!

I snapped a few pictures then scooted down just close enough to take the hand off of the log. Quick stamp and sign and gave it back. Then scooted back up for a few more pictures. I seriously can't believe the awesomeness of this final location! This is very high on my list of favorites!

We loaded our packs back up and pulled up the final cache. If I recall, it said it was only 1200' away? No biggie right? Wow, that's a lot of elevation lines on the topo! ha ha ha!

Thanks for creating this epic cache and maintaining it through all these years!

Holy smokes! I’d rate this one a touch higher just on the pucker factor alone once you’re at GZ. The hike there was a workout for the old ticker, but once GZ was located, I think the heart monitor would have gone off the charts. I kept waiting for the bad guys up here looking for $100M in a plane crash that Sly Stone and Janine Turner were sent to unwittingly. I guess they had better things to do. Maybe you should get the movie from the library.

Good to be out today on this wonderful summer day with good company to keep the pace moving and the directions known to get to this point (and not any further east!). Cat scat was seen down below on the trail, so they are active in the area but only saw at a deer at the end of the adventure.

I butt scooted my way to the appropriate place based on previous photographic recon posted, very helpful, and looked around to when I saw to my delight, the thing I think would be needed to sign the log. Carefully leaning forward I made way with retrieving the cache and not to disturb the shrub next to me (not that it cared, but the stories I am sure it could tell if it could tell of others looking for it).

Making this find was a nice way to cap this part of the hike out this far while taking in the view north to what I believe is the butte by Tomah Rd, east as far as one can see, and south showing a majority of the COS metro area. Blodgett Peak looks so different from the angle.

After closing the cache upon completion of signing it, I rehid it as intended to be found and reversed the butt scoot up the rock until comfortable to stand on my own.

Nice replacement cache by the way. Had water in it, which was dumped, and the logbook was damp in the zip loc bag, but otherwise it is fine right where it is. Thanks for the adventure here!

Was feeling lazy today and didn't really want to get out, but the snow had melted by noonish and I had run out of excuses, so I headed west. I had originally planned to do a different trail to get an oldie I needed for my Jasmer and pick up a bunch of medium/regular sized containers, but logs for the oldie indicated that it was missing, so I decided to make a "quick" run up to grab one regular and few puzzles along the way before heading back and jumping on the other trail. We make plans and God laughs!

Well, stage 1 was very close to the regular that I had my eye on, so I gave it a quick look but didn't see anything. Wasn't upset, I had no intention of doing a multi today. Got a couple hundred feet back down the trail and thought that I should go back and look again, because when will I be up in this area again? Coordinates zeroed out at a different place this time, and I spotted it upon approach. Next stage isn't too far away, and what's down this trail, anyway? Never been up here before! Ahhh, the carrot was dangled!

Now, it is worth repeating that I had no intention of going for this cache today. So I didn't even read the cache page. Or look at the hints. If I had known I could stay on the trail for all of them, this would have been a much more straightforward adventure! :-) This particular trail doesn't show up on my phone app. So, after wandering off trail a little, I find stage 2 in great shape. Huh, that was literally right on the trail. Funny!

Stage 3 also doesn't look very far away, but the trail gets very steep and very faint in spots. Thank you for placing the cairns along the way! I'm embarrassed to say it took me over an hour to find this stage! Now, 1) I had lost the trail about 400 feet from stage 3 and it's super steep, so I was up and down that slope like no one's business, 2) GPS was bouncing around a lot, and 3) I had not read the hint, so I didn't know that if I simply found the trail, that would narrow my search radius dramatically. Anyway, it had turned into a beautiful day, and I didn't have anything else to do, so I'm glad I kept poking around. Must have climbed right over it about 30 times before finally spotting it! Haha! But...what kind of coordinates were inside? Questionable digits?! How are they questionable?! But...they're only a few hundred feet away, so I might as well go check it out, right? Is the cache name legit?

As I turned the corner, I caught a glimpse of where GZ was going to be. Oh no. I'm not good with this kind of stuff, and I'm alone. But maybe I can at least get close and get out of my comfort zone a little bit, maybe practice for Stone Pony or something. To have the mental satisfaction of knowing that after I came all this way, that at least I tried. I mustered up my courage and started crawling around, kicking rocks off the edge and never hearing them land. I got to within 13 feet (using one set of coordinates) and had a horrible feeling of what was necessary. I definitely thought this was going to require a belly crawl to the edge and a blind sweep with my hand!! Plus, the questionable coordinates...meaning, doing that all along the ridge until maybe I found something?! Well, THAT wasn't going to happen.

(part 2)

At this point, I got a little smarter. I read the cache page! Oh, I'm looking for a contraption? And there were hints for the stages? Haha! I surveyed the likely area one more time, looking for something different, and immediately spot what I need. I guess my terrified state prevented me from noticing the obvious before. Okay, I climbed down almost to that spot before...I can do this again. Maybe. I hate this kind of thing, and I'm alone without any gear...but I'm RIGHT HERE.

As the hint encouraged, I stayed low and talked myself forward a few inches at a time until I reached the contraption. While the view was stunning, I was too terrified to look over the edge (which was like 2 inches in front of my feet) or quite frankly do anything other than pull the cache up and hold on to a scrub oak trunk for dear life. I have never been so grateful for scrub oak before!! Once the cache was in hand, it took another test of faith to let go of the scrub oak and coax it open. Water had accumulated inside and created a very tight vacuum seal. I was so afraid my struggling/wiggling would cause me to slip! LOOONG story short, I was rewarded by getting to sign a blank replacement log!!

It was only after I got back to the car that I read the previous logs. Wow, I'm glad I didn't read those before going for it! I had talked myself into trying by saying that other people had obviously found it, that I just needed to be brave enough to attempt it. If I had read about other (impressive) cachers' apprehension and gear that they had brought, I probably wouldn't have gone near that edge once, let alone twice!

Great cache idea. What a lovely trail, too! I will definitely be coming back this way! Thank you for the unexpected adventure, and for providing the opportunity to face and overcome a huge fear of mine!!

Found the first 3 stages and hiked to the location of the final. My GPS was bouncing around pretty good at the final and I wasn't willing to "crawl" to the edge to look for the container when I wasn't sure I was looking in the correct location. If anyone reading this post wants to work with me to make this find, please send me a message.

I have had to change my log entry on this cache from "found it," to "Didn't find it."

During my search of the GZ, I found a pill bottle with a log labeled "CLIFF HANGER multi- Temp replacement." Thinking that was the recent replacement that jjasks had put it, I thought my work was done and left.

Thanks to whomever put this here for ruining my hunt.

Cache is back in action! thanks K Trackers for the offer to help with the fix, it was enough to get me out there to correct. The trial after leg 2 is overgrown, I put in a bunch of rock cairns that will hopefully help. When you get to the fallen tree, go up hill and over the top of it.

Logging as a find with the owner's permission. Seriously an amazing cache. We had fun hunting trails and scrambling around on the last leg. I can't imagine many people make it up here, especially with how difficult finding the trail after leg 2 is. Looking forward to returning soon to help fix the final stage unless Josh beats me to it. Definitely adding a favorite point! Go find this cache, people!

Need to replace the final - looks like the wind got it again.

Seems like we were following Oregon around all day! We had a great time with this cache! The first three stages are all in great condition. We took a wrong turn once and had to go correct our mistake by re-finding the "trail." Near WP2 is where we lost it but after some searching, someone helped us out by stacking rocks. After a little bit of this we found the faint trail described. Made it all the way to the final and did a lot of scrambling (and had at least one near-death experience), and came up empty. Unless the thing was FATHER down than where we were, we checked everywhere. That said, it it truly is father, I likely will not complete this until I go with someone with more knowledge than me about free-climbing. We had a ton of fun, though! Thanks for bringing us up here! Will contact the CO and a previous finder or two to get some intel on where/what the thing could be.

Not Quite Far Enough, I Guess

Hi - I visited legs 1 & 2 today and found them in great shape. My " planned" route for my first look around Blogett was off in the other direction so I'll see to the rest of the cache next time. It's been fun so far!!

We decided to tackle this one in the rain and wind but by the time we reached the final both had thankfully subsided! Our GPS was off by about 18 feet the whole day so when it was saying the cache was 18 feet out in the middle of the air we decided to start looking a little closer to terra firma. After looking around for about 10 minutes we made the find. Java Chip suggested a rope which is probably a good idea! Great views at the final! This is one gets a favorite! TFTC!
