Knot

KNOT

THE TERM “KNOT” OR “NAUTICAL MILE” IS USED WORLD WIDE TO DENOTE A SHIP’S SPEED THROUGH WATER. TODAY, WE MEASURE KNOTS WITH ELECTRONIC DEVICES, BUT 200 YEARS AGO SUCH DEVICES WERE UNKNOWN. INGENIOUS MARINERS DEVISED A SPEED MEASURING DEVICE BOTH EASY TO USE AND RELIABLE: THE “LOG LINE”. FROM THIS METHOD WE GET THE TERM “KNOT”. THE LOG LINE WAS A LENGTH OF TWINE MARKED AT 47.33 FOOT INTERVALS BY COLORED KNOTS. AT ONE END WAS FASTENED A LOG CHIP; IT WAS SHAPED LIKE THE SECTOR OF A CIRCLE AND WEIGHTED AT THE ROUNDED END WITH LEAD. WHEN THROWN OVER THE STERN, IT WOULD FLOAT POINTING UPWARD AND WOULD REMAIN RELATIVELY STATIONARY. THE LOG LINE WAS ALLOWED TO RUN FREE OVER THE SIDE FOR 28 SECONDS AND THEN HAULED ON BOARD. KNOTS THAT HAD PASSED OVER THE SIDE WERE COUNTED. IN THIS WAY THE SHIP’S SPEED WAS MEASURED.

Went for a ride down to the Santa Fe Trail and used the opportunity to look for some Caches. Quite the interesting experience since Tally is still getting used to trains , nevertheless we found this one ! TFTC!!!

Class ended early, so I took the scenic route home, picking up some puzzles, interesting caches, and larger containers along the way. With this cache, I believe I've finally cleared out this end of the Santa Fe Trail! Thanks for hiding this big one! Took a puzzle piece...now I just need to figure out what to do with it!

In town for an orientation and football game at the Air Force Academy. Stayed at a really neat B&B on the creek. Desperately need a Colorado find so I got to this one the hard way as it is on the wrong side of the creek and I had to fine a way to cross. Luck was with me in the form of a big fallen tree. I managed to make my way across without getting wet (It was really cold.) and proceeded to the cache. Disappointed at the lack of a travel bug but really happy to get another state. Thanks for the really nice cache. It's in good shape.

Thanks for the cache! I was supposed to meet up with a friend this afternoon but those plans were derailed. So I decided to go for a hike and enjoy the sunshine a bit. Even though it was chilly this made for a great walk on the way home from work. I parked at the trail head and set my sights on this cache. It's the last one I need in the series! Found the cache quickly. Signed and stamped the log. Snapped a pic of a clue sheet and replaced as found. All is well here! Thanks for placing this cache and the fun series!
