an easy cache-n-dash along Greenland Road
Inspired in part by Tom.Dog’s American Wildlife series.
While out geocaching along South Spring Valley road, getting some of the NAA power trail, I heard a peculiar sound I have not heard in a very long time. It sounded something like this:

After scanning the sky several times while moving from cache to cache, I finally spotted about 20 sandhill cranes. Farther down the road there was a great flock of about 50 sandhill cranes. Then another flock… and another.
Since this seems to be a good spot along their migration route, I placed a cache here to commemorate these magnificent birds.
For more information on sandhill cranes, this wiki article is very comprehensive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandhill_Crane
To see the cranes in person: Go to Kearny, Nebraska in February or March. Be prepared to be amazed! There will easily be half a million cranes, several hundred thousand Canada geese and nearly as many snow geese along the sandbars of the Platt River. Or go to Gainesville, Florida in December or January: same deelio in Paynes Prairie, or in the cow pastures outside of town. Thousands upon thousands of cranes.
Or do Tom.Dog’s NAA series on just the right day in October: you’ll see hundreds of these birds as they fly overhead. And the roads out here are quiet enough to hear them , first!
Cache is a cammoed peanut butter jar.
