This is an official National Park Service Earthcache located within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Parking is available in designated spaces and cache can be accessed on a relatively level established trail. Altitude at this cache is above 8000'.
This viewpoint offers unique and often dizzying views into the canyon. Trademarked by jutting monoliths of grayish metamorphic rock, visitors often have trouble focusing. Metamorphic rocks are formed from the heating and/or extreme pressures of the deep underground of other rocks. The texture and minerals are changed in the rocks because of this heating/pressure. Pegmatite dikes which were injected into the surrounding rocks as hot molten liquids, cooled slowly forming large crystals. They serve as colorful reminders of the ancient geologic activity integral to the dynamics of the canyon. The high desert vegetation surrounding the overlook consists primarily of Gambel oak, Pinyon, and juniper. Below the rim, Douglas fir trees thrive and along the river, boxelder and other warmer-climate trees grow abundantly. Spend several minutes adjusting your eyes and answer the following cache-claiming question according to your best estimate. To claim this cache, email CURE BLCA your answer to the following question: The pillar directly in front of you is about ___ the height of the canyon. A) 1/3 B)2/3 C)3/4 D)1/2

TFTC and the question. We found this on the solstice during a freezing hail storm. It was a fun run back to the car.

Messaged owner to claim; no reply. This one tricked me - I think I misunderstood but I assure you I was there and looked very hard. TFTC.

Holy cow. I've been wanting to come out this way for a while yet, and hitting 2000 geocaches made for a good excuse. :D My sister, Krittab, came out for a visit so we planned to come out here. So glad we did! It's a visceral experience to stand on the overlooks here. I literally felt weak-kneed. Amazing! Tftc!

Running around the Ouray-Durango area and logging a few caches along the way.
We just got home and 1st chance we've had to get our finds logged in the computer.
Found at 2:44 PM.
Answer to the question to claim this cache was emailed to the CO altho the CO has been MIA for over 10 years.

Definitely an optical illusion here. Seemed like it was just a stone's throw across this chasm but I’m sure it’s much further than I realized.
Thanks for the EarthCache.

Gps was not helping me here, as it kept zeroing out nowhere near the edge, and close to both sides. But I think I know the answer.
