The Dead Tree

This cache is located off of Trail 713, on top of a scary group of boulders. It is a small log and pen only container located at an altitude of 9250 feet. The views from the coordinates are hard to beat, so bring your picnic basket and stay awhile. You will find unobstructed views of the Rampart Reservoir, Ormes Peak and Pikes Peak. The climb will require some class 4 bouldering moves. If the pictured 'dead tree' is missing, consider this class 5 bouldering, or 5 star terrain.

Pure fun! Had a great time with lots of laughs!

This CO's caches are often challenging and always memorable and this one is no different. I hadn't really considered doing this one until COpackrat mentioned the possibility. It was a fun scramble up to the dead tree and with COpackrat's coaching the last bit wasn't too bad. We took some time to admire the view from the top. There was lots of green and the burn area looks much better this year. The down climb was challenging too but again some help from COpackrat made the difference. TFTC
Sweet victory

Had a nice walk to the cache area, then proceeded to circumnavigate the feature before finding the way up. Did some interesting scrambling before getting to the right area, and was happy that the crucial tree was still there and negotiable. I had read the prior log about the container being missing, so replaced it with a camo'ed preform wired to a small rock to hopefully help stabilize it. Thanks for another fun adventure!

Made it to the top of the boulder, but we couldn't find the cache. Pretty disappointing, given all the effort to get to the top of the rock, especially in 30 knot winds. Thoroughly searched the crevice shown the spoiler and all around the rock. Dead tree ladder is still there, fortunately.

Wow, fun hike! and great scenery! TFTC! Tree ladder is still there, and the cache is still in good shape.

So if we compare this cache to Blodgett Shadow, then I guess it is a 4.5, but on any other caching trip, it would have to be a 5-star. I loved the view from this cache. Today had to be the best day you could ask for, considering it is early February. The Skies were Colorado Blue, the temp was approx. in the low 40’s, and there was not a cloud between us and the summit of Pikes Peak. Seeing views like this supports the reason why I live in Colorado. We hiked in some 6 to 7 miles, one way, for this cache. Many places the snow was over my knees, and a few places up to waist. Lucky, not all places. We had snowshoes with us, but I never put them on. I just keep on marching until we found Picnic Rock. From about .20 miles away, this is one series looking rock. When you get closer, it still is huge, but knowing that there is an old tree bridge, for the last hurdle, that at least gives you hope you can summit it. We found a way through the boulder field, and made it to the tree bridge. Since Blodgett Shadow was our warm-up, the accent was a piece of cake, that is, until you have to come back off of it. I enjoyed this cache. My hat goes off to you Cirrus for pointing out this view. Thanks for the Caching experience, and I got to enjoy every minute of it with two great guys, Vorticity and Mtn_Goat. Keep them coming, but give me a little time to recover between them. Once again, TFTH, SL Spivey

Mtn_Goat, Spivey, and I made a loop in the back country today. It was 14.3 miles total. I can say it is great to have this one off my list. The hike to Picnic Rock was brutal considering the snow, particulary on 713 ... Ouch. We should get an extra terrain star. This cache was simply super. The final climb was very cool. Superb view. Great experience. Vort.
In Some Places The Snow Was DEEP!!

We were pretty beat after hiking through snow most of the way there. Getting on the rock was a piece of cake after Blodgett's Shadow. Thanks for the workout.

This was like a picnic after my visit to Blodgett's Shadow.

Great hike to stretch the legs from a Winter slumber and get some awesome views in as well.

Thanks -Kris
