Jackson County has 114 mountain summits that are officially designated as “ranked” peaks. Dean Peak is one of them, and its elevation (8,555 feet) places it as the second lowest of these 114 summits. Although the “climb” to the summit is a short one and gains only about 525 feet of elevation, the terrain is moderately steep; no trail exists. My puppy Orizaba and I made the hike in early morning; the autumn temperature was crisp and invigorating. We enjoyed it!
The cache is approximately quart-sized and is wrapped in black tape. It contains a log sheet and a pen. It’s hidden about 100 feet away from the true summit, but should not be challenging to locate. Please replace it carefully in the location you found it. After finding the cache and signing its log, take some time to sit on this open summit and marvel at the magnificent views. The peaks of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area to the west show prominently from this interesting summit.
The cache is on a small square parcel of BLM land that has its southeastern corner overlapping Colorado Highway 127. Make certain that you study an appropriate map in advance so you directly access this public land without trespassing on adjacent private ranch land. Enjoy your hike and your cache-finding on Dean Peak!
