Pikeview is a neighborhood in northwest Colorado Springs, which was annexed to the city in 1962.  It is also the name used for the USGS Quadrangle map of the same area.  You won't find this geocache on the Pikeview map, however.  It's on the Cascade Quadrange, which is just to the west.  The geocache is located near the 8,415' summit of an unnamed peak which is prominently visible from Pikeview and the surrounding areas.  This peak doesn't get the same attention as its higher neighbor, Blodgett Peak, which most locals can easily identify.  Even though it is closer to town than Blodgett, access is difficult, so it is infrequently climbed.  Reaching the summit will earn you great views of Colorado Springs, Flying W Ranch, the Air Force Academy, and of course Pikes Peak.  Along the way, you may even catch a view of an airplane wing across the valley near the Wreckage of the Past geocache.

From Colorado Springs, the easiest way to reach this peak (and the cache) is from Blodgett Peak Open Space (see the waypoint for parking).  But, this is not an easy hike.  The trails in the Open Space will only take you so high and so far, and then you are on your own for routefinding and navigation.  You will have to hike steep terrain, most of which is off-trail, and most of which is in the Waldo Canyon Fire burn area.  Expect plenty of loose scree, fallen trees, and perhaps some bushwhacking.  An early start is recommended - plan on at least 5-6 hours round-trip.  A trekking pole is also recommended due to the steep terrain.  Oh, and beware of rattlesnakes.

You may also be able to approach the cache from Rampart Range Road, but I cannot vouch for a good route from there.

Please respect private property.  Don't be tempted to shorten the hike by trespassing.

Once you reach Ground Zero, you are looking for Bruce's ammo can.  It should be an easy search -- you've done enough work to get here!

Congrats to ernie66 for FTF honors!

FTF today at 12:30pm. What a hike!

I came from Blodgett Open Space as suggested and did a few other caches on the way. All in all, the hike was some 6 miles RT and over 2500 feet of elevation gain, but those statistics don't reflect the slow-going off-trail distance, hiking through prickly post-fire vegetation and loose rocks while side-hilling across slopes up to 45 degrees.

In due time, I made it to the cache and, as promised, it was a nice easy find. I grabbed the FTF prize (thanks, I'll get that activated and sent out!) and traded out the other trackables. It's been a long time since there's been a new cache in this region that can compare to this. The effort level involved in reaching the cache is significant and the location choice is spectacular, which makes that effort worth it.

Definitely a favorite, TFTC!
