Rio Grande headwaters

EL: 11,972 4X4 required, Accessibility: June thru October
This cache, an ammo can, is located about 1 1/2 miles below Stony Pass on the eastern slope next to a small creek called the Rio Grande. This is where the mighty Rio Grande begins its 1,885 mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. We found it amazing that so many passersby were unaware that the second longest river in the country (after the Missouri) begins here. Seemed like a good place for an educational cache.
The cache is accessible from Silverton over Stony Pass, or from Creede on CO 18. A 4x4 is definitely required. Depending on how severe the winter, it may be impossible to visit it more then a few months in the summer. The hint is a spoiler, so try w/o it first.

Picture this: A Jeep Cherokee, a Jeep Wrangler, and a CJ-7 climbing over Timber Hill and arriving at this beautiful location. What a great place for a hide. The cache is in great shape. TFTC. Will post some pics once I get them off the big camera.

Amazing area - just beautiful. It would have been fun to continue down the road to Kite Lake, but the sky started to look a bit threatening and we would have been easy targets. Nice spot for a cache. Thank you.

The mighty Rio Grande is already sizable by this point. Fun cache in a spectacular area, thanks!
