Takes less than an hour  Parking available  Short hike (less than 1km)  Seasonal Access

The cache is located near the summit of Cumbres Pass at the intersection of three "roads"; Colorado Highway 17, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT).  The Cumbres and Toltec runs on the tracks of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) that established this route in 1880. When completed it ws one of the highest railroads in the United States.  Cumbres Pass is not on the Continental Divide, which is 10 miles west of Chama.  The Continental Divide National Scenic trail passes through here, and not along the actual Continental Divide, because of the public lands corridor required for the trail.  Colorado highway 17 was completed in 1923 following one of several wagon routes that were cut from Antonito to Chama over Cumbres Pass. The summit of Cumbres Pass is 10,022' at the railroad depot building and the cache is at 10,004' (based on Google Earth mapping). The cache is near the railroad trestle at mile 330.77, which was the railroad mileage from Denver, CO on the (D&RGW).  This trestle was the railroad overpass above Colorado Highway 17 until the late 1960's when the highway was rerouted. There is a CDT log box not far from the cache.  The state border with New Mexico is about 5-6 miles south along the CDT.

This is a seasonal cache that will probably be snow covered during the winter. Access on the shoulder seasons will be weather dependent. There have been historical reports of 20 foot snow drifts at Cumbres Pass.

Thanks for the cache! This is an interesting area with the narrow gauge train running over Cumbres pass.

Headed down from Denver to meet up with a friend from high school and ride the train. Stopped here on the way back, and I recognized this spot from the train. Very fitting name, never know how we may cross paths or with whom. tft , SL

Co FTF with KCSearcher @ 8:19 am - Last day of a 13 day trip with KCSearcher to complete the New Mexico Delorme Challenge, the Futurama or New Mexico counties, the oldest cache in New Mexico, Open Space 7, and the New Mexico part of Cache Across America called Cache Across America - New Mexico. Today we drove from Taos, NM. to Gallup, NM. We completed pages 12, 13, 14 and 15 to complete the Delorme Challenge requirements and county of San Juan to complete the Counties Challenge requirements and found the finals for both caches. Picked up this cache as a side trip from planned route as we wanted the FTF in Colorado. Made it a favorite for the great location but a nasty hide to locate. TFTH. SL
