A small camo'd cache in the vicinity of Uncle Bud's Hut. Replaced 10/22/16.
Congrats to Outdoor Lover for FTF!
10/22/16: Cache replaced, new and improved container, new and improved hiding place at the same coords. There was no sign of the original cache. New contents: log with mini pen; necklace made from old watch parts; carabiner; Japanese eraser- motorcycle; and in acknowledgement of an upcoming holiday, a bat charm, a skull charm, a black cat charm and a monster finger puppet.
This cache is near Uncle Bud's Hut, one of several backcountry cabins maintained by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. The hut was built in memory of Bud Winters, a member of the U.S. 10th Mountain Division during WW2, who honed his backcountry skiing skills in the Leadville/Aspen area in the 1940s. He died in combat in Italy at the age of 20. Many of his surviving comrades returned to the Colorado area and helped to popularize skiing in the United States.
In summer, you can hike to the cache via the Colorado Trail from the Timberline Lake Trailhead at the west end of Turquoise Lake. In winter, ski or snowshoe Forest Service Road 104 to Forest Service Road 107, and follow the 10th Mtn organization's instructions for locating the hut. You can in theory drive these roads also - in summer/early fall -but they require 4WD or AWD, and vehicle access to any 10th Mountain hut is never guaranteed.
Come see this incredible section of the Colorado Trail! While you're here, spare a thought for Bud Winters and the people who lost him. His family turned their loss into something beautiful that is shared with people from all over the world. I first discovered this place on a retreat with Live By Living, a non-profit that sponsors hut trips for cancer survivors and their caregivers; its founder was inspired to create the organization after losing his beautiful wife to cancer. Like Bud's family, he transformed his loss into something beautiful.
