Mt. Shavano (14,229') - SHAV-uh-no (rhymes with "have"). This mountain is in the Sawatch range named for a Tabeguache Ute chief who signed the Bruneau Agreement of 1873.

The cache is a hard plastic, log and pen only container, and is hidden in a manner for summit survivability. What is "summit survivability"? On a 14er summit, a cache has to contend with an extra-ordinary amount of muggles and rodents. It also has to survive ever-changing rock formations from erosion and rock shelters. This cache is away from the 'summit area', between two secure boulders, covered by small rocks. It should be easy for a cacher to find (and re-hide), yet hard for a muggle or rodent. It is located 60 feet at 345 degrees true from the summit register, on the path headed for Tabeguache Peak. Please view/print the images below, before beginning your hike!

Found this one after several minutes of searching. It seemed well-concealed to me and the coordinates were perfect. Signed one of the log sheets. TFTC!

Found it at 20170828-12:19. My GPS indicated 14221 feet elevation. Cache was not difficult to find. It looks like the pikas and marmots have been nibbling at the edges of the camo tape on the container (did not compromise the integrity of the container, though). When I replaced the cache, I put more rocks on top. While driving home, I wondered about the underside. Next geocacher, please add rocks to the underside.

I did not continue to Tabeguache since the Shavano hike took me longer than expected. If weather is good, I will approach Tabeguaghe from the other side in a couple of weeks.

TFTC!

Had a great day in the mountains with summits of both Shavano and Tabeguache. I was able to easily find both caches. The views from the summit of Shav are fantastic even though we had some clouds/fog obscuring some areas.

I started coming out to CO to check off these 14ers about 5 years ago. Later in the year this year but here I am. The trees changing makes it for one amazing trip. I drove in from Green Mountain Falls last night getting here at 3:15am slept a bit and then hit the trail (6:30am). There were two folks in front of me. They started at 6:00am and I never saw them again until they were just coming down from the summit. I had planned on hitting Tabeguache but I could not see the route. I was literally "in the clouds". Found cache pretty fast, signed log and hunkered it back down. The view was......oh about 100' was the view..not much to see at all. I'll be back to grab Tabeguache some day. Thank you

Found with Java Chip on one of the windiest days I've experienced on a 14er. The cache was gone so we replaced with a small plastic first aid kit at the exact location the spoiler photos showed it should be. Confirmed this was okay with cache owner as well. TFTC!

Darn, I am the first to find it in nearly a year. Long hard slog from TH to peak, as usual. Dallied on the peak for over an hour, the cache, photos, watched a storm get closer, started down when a bit of sleet descended. TFTC.

We were able to find the newly-placed replacement although it was not in exactly the same place as the spoiler pictures indicate. It was a few feet nearer the summit.
