Wilderness -- "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain ... an area protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions." —The Wilderness Act of 1964
The cache is placed in the San Isabel National Forest at an old mine site near the head of McNasser Gulch in the Sawatch Range. It is several hundred (horizontal) feet East of the boundary of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. Towering mountains, including Grizzly Peak, rise above this gulch and the cache location. Grizzly was once believed to be a 14er, but its elevation was ultimately determined to be 13,988 feet, making it the highest of Colorado’s 584 ranked 13ers. The container is a heavy-duty face creme jar wrapped in camo tape. Look for it near the entrance to a small adit that was used to store explosives needed in mine excavation activities. It has room for geocoins and small travelers. Make certain to bring a pen or pencil to sign the cache log.

Enjoy your hike to the old mine and the cache site. If you come via 4-wheel drive, your hike from parking will be approximately 3 miles RT. If you park at the 2-wheel drive area, expect a hike of approximately 6 miles RT. Both hikes involve considerable elevation gain to reach the cache, which is hidden at 12,000 feet.

I climbed Grizzly Peak with some friends and stopped to check on my cache as we returned to our camp at the trailhead. All is fine with the cache and container.

Nice spot to rest on the way up to Grizzly Peak and again on the way down from Garfield Peak. We didn't see another soul on the entire hike! TFTC!

BigSmileFTF!!!BigSmile Woke up to rain, experienced a blowing snowstorm on the pass, and drove through some pretty good rain going down the east side. I was planning on getting wet on the hike to the cache. By the time we got parked at the gate, the rain had stopped, which made for a very nice half hour hike to GZ. The views were awesome, especially with a dusting of snow on the surrounding peaks! Thanks for the awesome cache and cool experience! SL and left a Papua New Guinea coin and a CO flag trackable.
