Wilderness -- "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain ... an area protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions." —The Wilderness Act of 1964
The cache is located along the Midway Trail (Trail 1983) that branches from the Lost Man Trail at a sign near the beginning of switchbacks. Park at the Lost Man Trailhead and follow the main trail across a bridge and then begin your ascent to that sign. Expect to gain about 500 feet of elevation as you travel 0.86 mile (each way) to the cache from the trailhead. The trail is an excellent one, but it is moderately steep. Leave the trail at a sharp switchback when your GPSr reads that you are approximately 50 feet from the cache. The elevation of the cache is approximately 11,020 feet. The container is hanging about 6 feet above the ground in a fairly small, open Lodgepole Pine tree. Be certain to bring a pen or pencil for signing the cache log.

The trail continues a long distance beyond the cache, soon entering the wilderness area and ascending to Midway Pass at 11,841 feet. From the pass, it continues northwest to eventually connect with the Woody Creek Trail. Enjoy your hike and your introduction to the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area.

Was spending the weekend at Difficult Campground with my son's Boy Scout troop. I found some time on Saturday to go caches below the pass in the morning and in Aspen in the afternoon. Thanks for all the fun and the hiking.

Almost turned back at one point but forged on. This was definitely a 3 star terrain.

I've been looking at this one since it published and was fishing at the lake today, so I figured it was time to go get it. I left my gear by the lake and headed straight up to the cache. I could have chose an easier route. It may have been longer to go the trail route, but easier I'm sure!!!! Then what did I do, I headed straight back down. I had fun anyway, found the cache after a bit of a search and caught some fish too! TFTC!

Denali41 and I traveled to the Leadville/Independence area today for tomorrow's Mt Elbert Flash Mob event and spent the afternoon finding some nice caches in the area. Because we were so near these two Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness caches I had to make the drive over the pass from our camp to make the finds. Denali41 waited in the truck while I made the trek in the rain, on a sloppy trail, to this one. After spending 10 minutes in the wrong location I reacquired the cache on my GPSr and it then lead me about 35 feet uphill to the right location. Found this cache in to be in excellent shape. It looks like an area I'd like to explore some more! Thanks!!
