14ERS AREN'T THE ONLY MOUNTAINS OUT THERE

This cache has been placed on top of one of Colorado's 584 13ers, Taylor Mountain. Elevation is 13,651 feet above sea level.

This had been one of my favorite mountains to summit, after doing a plethora of 12ers and 14ers. There is no trail to the top, so here is the route that I advise you take. First, as far as parking is concerned, you can drive up Road 228 for the part that it is well defined and less narrow until you reach a large quarry at N 33.900 W 104 17.335. This is the route that all vehicles should be able to travel on. If you are confident in your vehicle, you can continue on 228 where it goes to one lane and becomes rather steep on the sides. Park at the advised coordinates below on the tailings pile of the New York mine. You can now switchback hike up the smaller roads to the point where they end. Try to aim for the East ridge of Taylor, and once on top of that, there will be one last push to the top of about a 4-5 hundred foot elevation gain.

You should find some excellent views as you travel along, but you shouldn't find any insane crowds of fluorescent clothed hikers like you would on 14ers. The entire time I hiked this mountain, I only saw one hiker far below me and heading downhill, and one ATV that pulled up a small trail and turned around. There is one big reason to love the 13ers...

See the hint if you are having trouble finding the cache, it shouldn't be too difficult like some other summit hides. You are searching for a decon container.

Have an excellent hike and good luck!

 Hints

From the summit, look down the ridge towards Mount Aetna. Go about 30-40 feet towards this ridge to a large rock. Under this rock there is a small pile of small rocks, under which is the cache.

I drove up to the suggested parking from the west side and started hiking from there. The road had one dip that concerned me a little but I didn't scrape anything in my Xterra. I hiked the road while I could and then just headed for the summit keeping to the grass as much as I could. Once I got there I found the cache quickly and enjoyed the view. The weather was looking good so I made the hike over to Mount Aetna for extra credit. The ridge got interesting in a couple spots but it wasn't too bad. It started raining a little before I got back to my car so I guess my timing was OK. On the way out I took the road to the east. It was longer and rough in spots but nothing that made me worried. I picked up the trackable that has been in the cache for almost 4 years. TFTC

Drove up a ways, then had a nice hike in the wind to the summit. Thanks for the well hidden cache and the great views!

Another very enjoyable summit cache. I was at the end of the road exploring last year and almost hiked up Taylor Mtn at that time...this year the cache was the just extra stimulus that I needed. TNLN. Thanks!!

I have a couple of days off work and am heading to southwestern Colorado for some 14'ers. Estes01 told me about this new cache and suggested I stop there on the way. I drove up to the suggested coordinates but didn't want to take my vehicle up the spur road. Fun cache and great view! Traded out both the TB's, SL, TFTC!

I'm confident in my vehicle, I'm not always confident in myself. I drove up about half a mile farther than the suggested parking coords at the New York Mine. RDAD will take his vehicle to the top, which means about another half mile up the road. I couldn’t find any information on TrailDamage.com beyond that mine and was afraid that I would get myself into a situation where it would have been difficult to turn around. As it turns out, I could have made it to where the road ends. As to the hiking part, although I was tempted to take the CO’s advice and take the east ridge, I decided to just go straight up, and it was not difficult. The big surprise was what awaited me at the top. I was amazed at the views of Antero, Shavano and Tabeguache…and there was a beautiful lake below that I identified as Boss Lake on my gps. Hopefully it has a different name. I love all the High in Colorado caches, and this one is going to get a favorite point for the maximum views with the minimum amount of effort. Not that it was effortless… There were two TBs in the cache, but as I didn’t have anything to swap, I left them there. It was a beautiful day. Thanks for the fun.
