This cache contains the West coordinates for "Legends, Loot, and Lore: Lady Coot's 1000th (GC1FT2J)

Make sure you gather the clue to find the cache!

You will also need to find: The Legend of the Gold Begins (GC1FT22)for the north coordinates. The trail is a nice forest service trail known as the "Gold Dust Trail", Mt. Silverheels, and Boreas Pass.

Coords were taken in thick trees. We had two GPSR's- you might want to try: N 39.22.091 W 105.57.547

The idea for this series came from a former student who told me about the legend of hidden gold somewhere in Bailey, Fairplay, or Como.

According to local history...

Part II-

The Reynold's Gangs Capture

A posse was eventually formed and on July 30, 1864, the Reynolds gang was spotted camping in a small clearing in the forest. A gunfight ensued, killing one outlaw by the name of Owen Singleterry.

The gang hid their loot and attempting to escape, headed in different directions. It was estimated at the time, that the gang had taken somewhere between $5,000 and $100,000 and area locals blamed them for every robbery in the area.

An even bigger posse was raised to capture the fleeing bandits. About 75 men joined the posse to find the southern raiders and just four days later, four of them were captured. Outlaw, Tom Holliman, was caught 4 or 5 days later as he made his way to Canon City, Colorado. However, Jim Reynolds, his brother John, and another gang member escaped to New Mexico.

As the five captured southern outlaws were being taken to Fort Lyon, the first stop on their way to Denver for a military trial, they attemped their escape. A fight started in which three of the prisoners were killed, however two managed to steal horses in the confusion and escaped!!!! The story end with:

Legends, Loot, and Lore: Lady Coot’s 1000th (GC1FT2J)

Cache is an ammo box hidden just off of the trail. Have fun! There is a beautiful clearing with great views just a little further up the trail.

Getting there: Take 285 to Como, CO. Drive through town, and stay on county road 50 past turn to Boreas Pass. Park at Trailhead...or more Parking about 100 feet up the road near Gold Dust Trail.

Headed up into the mountains today to enjoy the last bits of summer and see if the leaves are starting to turn. (They are!) A friend of mine has been interested in learning more about geocaching for a while so we headed out for some fun today. I put together a plan for the day, but then I made a wrong turn and we wound up here. No worries, saw these lonely caches nearby and we changed our plan. Put on our boots, threw some water and snacks in the backpack and we were off. Loved the hike back here and the company was great. Turns out nocogirl and I both prefer a slightly slower pace, she likes taking pictures and I'm out of shape! The cache is in great condition. Thank you for bringing us here and for the smiley! Found with nocogirl, #2770.

Easy find & got the second set of coordinates for the letterbox. On my way back down a biker suddenly came up behind me and scared me half to death. I wasn't expecting anyone since I hadn't seen another car at the trailhead. I called my dog and we got off the trail as fast as we could. I think they get dropped off at the top and sail all the way back down to Como.
