History:
On May 1, 1882, Henry Payton, James May, Walter Miller, and Lon
Wamsley incorporated the town of Castleton. Named for the nearby
castles rock formation, Castleton was a supply town for the nearby
mines. Castleton grew quickly with 2 stores, a schoolhouse, 10
houses, a restaurant, a saloon, and billiard hall built by the end
of 1882. In 1883, the Denver South Park railroad built the
Castleton spur along with a water tank, 2 story section house, and
a combination depot and freight house. That same year, the
Castleton post office was opened to serve its 300 residents. The
1884 silver collapse and the Denver South Park financial troubles
left Castleton abandoned and nothing more than a gathering places
for the area ranchers.
Castleton had a resurgence in 1887 with the establishment of the
Ohio Creek creamery and cheese factory. The creamery processed 1500
– 1800 pounds of milk daily and produced high quality butter
and cheese. By 1889, the factory shipped butter and cheese
throughout the west. On May 12, 1892, a fire completely destroyed
the factory. Castleton never recovered.
Today, the name remains with the Castleton Ranch along with a few
ruins.
