History:
In 1881, Kubler was formed with the opening of the
Kubler coal mine. Bituminous coal was mined with the room and
pillar method. Kubler had a population of 200, a saloon, a boarding
house, and 25 houses. In 1913, a strike was called to protest the
hiring of non-union African American miners. Fearing an outbreak of
violence, the mine was shut down and Kubler was abandoned.
In 1936, the mine reopened on a small scale. In 1946, the Kubler
mine was closed permanently and sold. Today, Kubler is on a private
ranch. The ruins of 1 building can be seen near the cache.
Information primarily taken from
"The Gunnison Country" by Duane Vandenbusche
(1980).
