Leroux Creek Series #2- 7X Ranch
***PLEASE SEE LEROUX CREEK SERIES #1 FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION***
The second cache in this series is located adjacent to the 7X Ranch. The sprawling grounds feature a beautiful castle and large barn. It is also rumored that the castle is haunted. Here is a brief history on the 7X Ranch.
John Edward Hanson emigrated from Denmark at the age of 4. After attending school in Michigan and Chicago, he headed west in 1884. He partnered with a friend, Joseph Reich, to run a stage line that covered a mail route. He returned to Lake City, Colorado where his wife died suddenly and he turned to gambling.
He later returned to Hotchkiss and bought land which included the mesa that now bears his name, Hanson Mesa. He was involved in many endeavors including continuing the Farmer's Ditch (which is used for irrigation), ran cattle, organized the First National Bank and even married Marcia Skinner in 1902. After many real estate sales, he purchased the land that now contains the castle. He hired the Sherman Brothers to cut the rocks from his property that were used to construct the castle. The Leroux Creek castle was built in 1909.
There is ample parking at the intersection near GZ. There can be traffic at the intersection at times, so just wait for the cars to pass before hunting.
Happy Hunting!
