Cowboy and Shane picked up the miner’s payroll in Cortez for delivery the Rico Queen mine.  The cash was loaded in a strongbox bolted to a buckboard. It had a large padlock which was reported to be bullet proof.  Cowboy noticed that two shady characters were watching their every move as they loaded the money in the box.  They headed north toward the Dolores River.  Once on the trail, the dust behind them meant trouble.  They could not outrun men on horses so Cowboy threw away the only key to the strongbox.  As Shane whipped the horses into a gallop, Cowboy pulled off a couple of shotgun blasts at the riders, then grabbed his 44 Colt and fired more shots.  The owlhoots quickly broke off the attack and hightailed it toward Cortez.   Cowboy said “I guess we showed them some firepower, but now we need a locksmith”.
