The ranch located on HW 40 at this intersection is probably best known as the Hereford Haven ranch, however it’s homesteadser's BT Shelton and his wife Anna, were vital figures in the development of Hayden and Routt County. They homesteaded this ranch in 1889 and lived here their entire married lives - almost 67 years! BT helped his father, Ezekiel, in the surveying of early Routt County roads, built major ditches that irrigated Hayden in the early days and remain today, worked at Norvel Mercantile for 17 years, was the postmaster in Hayden in for 12 years, helped organize the Yampa Valley Bank, served as Mayor of Hayden, served on the school board for 18 years, was a charter member of the Hayden Masonic Lodge, was one of the founders of the Hayden Congregational church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years, and was one of the founding fathers of the Routt County Fair serving as manager for the first 8 year, among other things. Anna was a founding member of the the Hayden Eastern Star, and a founding member of the Woman’s Association and the Woman’s Club, she ran a stage stop at their ranch and was a school teacher for several years along with being a postal clerk.
So while this ranch is best known as the “Hereford Haven Ranch” - a huge cattle ranch in the 1970s and 80s - it’s homesteaders were much more to Hayden!.
This cache MAY be accessible in the winter - but would depend on how deep the snow is -- in the spring, how deep the ditches are!
