Wilderness -- "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain ... an area protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions." —The Wilderness Act of 1964

The cache is a large bison tube hidden about 130 feet before the Weminuche Trail reaches the wilderness boundary sign.  Look carefully, and you'll find it!

The  hike from the trailhead parking area to the cache location is approximately 0.8 mile each way. Enjoy your hike, and after finding the cache consider continuing on the trail into the wilderness and visiting the wonderful waterfalls along Weminuche Creek. If you have a full day available, plan and take an out-and-back hike that brings you to locations where you'll have superb views of Rio Grande Pyramid peak and the remarkable "Window" geologic feature.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TwoElkers FOR THE FTF!!

TFTC been on this trail many times with family who do not geocache, but had a chance today to come up here on my own. 2-3 minutes to find. GPS always jump around and new geocachers need to give the GPS time to settle down. Mine showed the cache with 6-8 feet of GZ and I’d say that was pretty darn good.

After a 3 day hike down the Weminuche Trail my last act was to find this cache. A brief overview of my hiking notes:
Started at Thirty Mile Campground. Started first thing in the morning and hiked to established rancher campground at 37 38.788 107 20.014. Day two hiked to granite mountain guard shack 37 35.908 107 21.033 and then to the west side of granite lake. Saw bald eagle at granite lake. Day 3 hiked all the way out. Weather was mid 70/mid 40. After arriving at rancher camp pea sized hail for about 1.5 hours. Rained every afternoon around 1400. 55 lb pack with single man tent. Most of weight came from MRE’s as I planned on being on the mountain 5-6 days. Caught trout in Pine River. Total miles hiked 27 miles.

With some luck, found this one fairly quickly. Didn't have a pen to sign the log, but I do have a picture to prove we found it.

Thanks for your "Found it! "log, and suggestion, Utahcolor. Congratulations on your find! It's a nice area, isn't it?!

I've found more than 140 2D/2.5T caches, and I believe my rating of this specific cache is pretty much spot on compared to all of these. You might believe so too after you've found more of this combination and have a better basis for comparison.

We think it would be OK to up the difficulty level on this one a little. The forest is dense enough to give a GPS some bounce and it might take a little good fortune to actually spot the cache. The trail out to it involves a long initial climb, then a fairly significant descent which must be regained on the way back. All this is at 9500 feet. Nothing unusual at all for a Colorado trail, but probably not one to do on a sunny, hot day. Weminuche Pass is a fine destination for a 10 miler. TFTC
