Pikes Peak Marathon
Pikes Peak Marathon

Pikes Peak Marathon
America's Ultimate Challenge. This cache is placed on the race course for the Pikes Peak Marathon, run on the Barr Trail every August. The marathon starts in Manitou Springs, CO and runs 13 miles up and 13 miles back down the Barr Trail for a total of 26.2 miles of both agony and joy. This last section before the turnaround is especially difficult because of the 16 sets of switchbacks called the 16 Golden Stairs, the many step-ups on each of those switchbacks, and the lack of oxygen. There are 2 ways to access this cache. Hike the 13 miles up from the trailhead in Manitou Springs or hike the difficult and steep .4miles down from the summit. I have included a couple of pictures of the cache and it's placement. You will understand why this is needed when you get there. These pictures were taken during the marathon and show several of the runners struggling to the top. The cache is a waterbottle with a logbook placed underneath a large boulder about 30 ft directly west and uphill of the sign indicating the beginning of the 16 golden stairs. Be sure to bring a pen and sign the log. Enjoy yourself - the scenery can't be beat - and think of those who run in this legendary race every August.

Please do me a favor if you go to this cache. Please make sure that it is returned to its position very securely so wind, rainfall, snow, or ice do not move it. I think it would be best to make sure several larger rocks are placed in front of it. Thanks, and enjoy the view!

I have run the Pikes Peak Marathon 5 times with a personal best of 6:39 for the 26.2 mile round trip. I hope to return many more times!

What better day to summit America's mountain Pikes Peak than on the fourth of July! Went up Barr Trail from Manitou Springs and of course I had to use the opportunity to grab some caches, this was one of them!! Grabbed this one on the way down, TFTC!!!

#41903 Found while on a visit to Pike's Peak today. It was a beautiful day to be up on the mountain. The snow wasn't too bad, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Since most the summit area was under construction, I decided to take a short hike down the trail to grab this cache. It wasn't all that far, but there still was a fairly substantial elevation change, which wasn't that easy given the altitude. There wasn't a ton of snow, but there was just enough to make it icy and tricky footing in certain spot. I took my time and was able to make it down to the cache without falling. Smile There thankfully wasn't too much snow at the cache site, but I still had to wander around a bit before finally spotting the hiding spot. Had to dig out a little snow, but it wasn't too bad. After making the trek down, I'm glad I didn't have to leave with a DNF. Thanks for the fun cache hunt in such a beautiful location. TFTC

We've visited Pikes Peak many times, but never since we started geocaching. Today was an ideal one to drive up to the summit. Perfect skies allowed us to see forever.

I've run the Pikes Peak Ascent twice, including once after this cache was placed. So I know I've run right by it! Unfortunately, that was before geocaching. So I descended a bit and found the cache pretty quickly today. TFTC!

On a Fall trip through Colorado doing some caching and seeing the sites. A beautiful scenic drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. Visiting the downtown areas of Boulder, Denver, Castle Rock and Colorado Springs to name a few. We enjoyed a beautiful hike on the Barr trail at the Summit of Pikes Peak. It was a wonderful trip with quite a bit of caching thrown in along the way.
We arrived at the entrance this morning and were second in line. When the ranger came by to talk with us they recommended we go straight to the top as there was an 80% chance of snow. We took her advice. We had sun on the way up and during our hike then the clouds rolled in and we endured snow, hail, sleet and rain on the way down. This made for an interesting day of caching with all the stops, but we survived and had fun. Thanks for placing this one.

Colorado Road Trip!

Headed out for a long weekend road trip with a small number of hand picked caches. I headed south to Topeka and then to Colorado Springs, next to Cheyenne and Rapid City before heading home. I camped most of the way when I could find campgrounds. The scenery was incredible and the hikes in the mountains worth the trip. All these caches made the trip worth every minute!

When I arrived at Pikes Peak they said the summit was closed and may not open today. I was bummed but biught my pass anyway. I headed up findning caches and taking pictures and memories along the way. When I reached the big parking lot they said the top was open but I had to ride a shuttle. I arrived at the top and headed for the 16 Golden Stairs. I worked my way and saw a few Marmots and met two groups of hikers that hiked up the Barr Trail. I spent about an hour hiking with the last person and learned quite a bit about Pikes and Coolorado. What a great place full of great people!

The Hiker named Dan was from the Denver area and decided last night to hike all the way up the Barr Trail. I met him by the 16 Golden Stairs arounsd 1:30 PM. He helped me look for the cache and signed himself in. We slowly hiked to the top and he was there around 2:00 PM. Thank you for this cache and brining me to this wonderful place on our planet!

Thanks runjimrun for the cache!

The summit was socked in clouds. Hiked down the trail to this cache and came up with it pretty quickly. It was nicely placed so that it was easy to spot, but unlikely to be found. When I got back to the summit, the clouds had (literally) blown away and the views opened up. So TFTC and the delay!

I wouldn't fancy running up and down here, four miles down and four miles back up was enough for me This cache was full of trackables of which I have taken 4, including the arrowhead and playing card coins, but I will need to find a magnifying glass to get the codes off. An amazing day on Pikes Peak which ended with a few flakes of snow much to everyones amazement.

Wow, what a day. Weather, views, sights and caches. The plan was to take advantage of the weather and find some Pikes Peak caches. Particularly at the Devil's Playground. Since that hike went OK, I decided to explore Barr Trail from the top. Found the cache. All seven TBs accounted for and left for subsequent visitors. Thanks for placing a cache here.

Recently moved here from CA (#SorryNotSorry Wink) and taking son to college this weekend. We wanted to find a place to spend half a day or so and Pike's Peak hit the spot. (I wasn't thrilled that the US Adventure Pass isn't accepted here even though Pike's a US Forest...

Anyway, not having acclimated yet to this elevation, we didn't do much while up here, but we wanted to at least grab this one. Although the goods were 25-30' from my GZ, we found within a decent search. We SL and left a decent amount of trackables for the next few finders Smile

TFTC, and for the views!

Fav? Of course!

It was a beautiful day at Pikes Peak and we searched for around 20 minutes but we couldn't find it. I looked at the pictures but I couldn't find the right boulder, I hope that we come back and find it

TFTC, it definitely felt like a marathon hiking down to this but more so hiking back up. There were a lot of hikers getting ready for a hiking event, I guess hiking from the bottom to the top multiple times. I found the cache easily enough and took a short break before going back up.
