Black Bear Pass (Forest Road 823) is one of the premier Jeep trails in Colorado. Known for "The Steps" and the "Switchbacks" which get you down into the town of Telluride. Starting at about mile 5.6 on this trail (from highway 550 to Telluride) becomes one way downhill only. If you are not an experienced trail driver with a good clearance vehicle, and a short wheelbase, my sugestion is to turn around at the cache, and go back to highway 550. If you are adventurous, there are several more caches down along this route that can be yours. The trail up to the cache is rated at Moderate 4-6 on a 1-10 scale. On the downhill section from the steps through the switchbacks to the bottom is rated as difficult 6-8.

From the trailhead on the cache page, to the summit is approximitly 3.2 miles all uphill. This secction can be done with any stock Jeep, SUV, AWD Crossover with clearance, or pickup truck, any of these must have 4WD, and a low gear option would be best. Once you are at the summit of the pass road you will find the sign in the backgroundd picture. Park nearby and the cache will not be far.

 Hints

Cache is placed in a hole in the rock wall with other rocks covering it. Inside the cache I placed the log sheet inside a smaller clear plastic tube to protect it.

Quick find, which was good because I had six jeeps full of muggles waiting for me. Great day to be out. Thanks for placing.

Dropped down off Ophir Pass & climbed up Big Bear from the Silverton side. First time up on Big Bear. We came by ourselves (without other vehicles) so decided to not go on down to Telluride. Hoping for another FTF, we made a quick find on the container, logged in & replaced where we found it. Another cache was waiting nearby so another search was on. Thanks for the fun.
