Oh What a View

RM Off Road Series (ORS) #2: Saxon Mountain

This cache is the third of six in my #2 series of off-road caches located along Saxon Mountain Road. This route runs for about 14 miles round trip starting from Georgetown and winding to the summit of Saxon Mountain then returning via the same route.

Cache Information
This is another great place to stop and check out the view. In addition to the view pictured on the cache page, there is a beautiful view up the valley along route 70. This is the easiest of the caches to access with parking only a few feet from the cache. Please cover the cache well when you are finished.

RM Off Road Series #2 Complete Cache Listing (Start to Summit)

2. Don't Look Down
3. Oh What a View
4. I Came Up That?
5. Window to the World
6. Pick a View

Trail Information

Rating/Description
My book rates this trail as easy but I don't agree with that rating. I would say it is on the low end of moderate. The trail is rocky/bumpy most of the way to the top. Give yourself plenty of time and take it slow. In some areas the trail is steep with a few narrow sections that are on the edge. Most stock SUV type vehicles should have no trouble on this trail. Disclaimer: You need to decide for yourself if it is safe to make the trip in your vehicle. Note: ATV's are allowed, but there is no staging area at the bottom, so you must offload somewhere along the beginning of the trail.

Winter Months
There is a gate near the bottom of the trail, so they may close this trail in winter.

Time/Distance
The round trip trail is approximately 14 miles and should take about 3 to 4 hours driving time. You will also need to include time for finding the caches, exploring (make sure you check out the old log cabins along the route), sight seeing, lunch, etc. I suggest you have lunch at the summit where the last cache in the series is located.

Trail Waypoints
This route should be easy to navigate to the summit using the caches in the series as your intermediate waypoints. There is one extra waypoint provided with the first cache of this series, Georgetown Lake View.

Hiking all the way up here is much more difficult than a 2.5 terrain for sure but you definitely need more than your basic SUV to get up here now. Don't know how many more boulder rock slides this road can take before it gets blocked completely. But this is a great view for sure.
Is your vehicle skinny enough?

Fun day checking out the trails and some caches.
Guess I first found this one back in 2009, but failed to log it. Oh well.
This was found by some muggles on 8/3/15 and they signed the log and left some ammo inside. I removed the ammo and tried to hide it a little better. As I was signing the log, I heard, then saw, 3 HUGE boulders rolling down the slope in the rock fall area about 1/4 mile down the road. Never saw that before!
Cache is in great shape. Ammo cans are awesome! Thanks.

The day started with OF Erad making the trek from Colorado Springs up to Centennial to meet up at my place. Once we got rolling we made our way up to the hills for some off road 4x4 caching in the Idaho Springs/ Georgetown area. Had a great time with OF Erad, who provided chow and a good running partner chasing caches. Thanks for putting this one out for all to enjoy. TFTC Semper Fi- OMUSMC

Spent the day on an excellent offroad adventure with "oscarmikeUSMC" (aka Gunny+1). His YOTA took this YODA to some very cool places today. Thanks for placing this cache for us to find! And a huge Thanks to Gunny for a great day! SL, TFTC!
