RM Off Road Series (ORS) #2: Saxon Mountain

This cache is the first of six in my #2 series of off-road caches located along Saxon Mountain Road. This route runs for about 14 miles round trip starting from Georgetown and winding to the summit of Saxon Mountain then returning via the same route.

Cache Information
This cache is located near the corner of one of the many switchbacks that you will encounter on your trip up the mountain. It is a good place to have your first break and take in the views of Georgetown Lake below. The cache is an easy scramble up a little hill from a small parking area. Please cover the cache well when you are finished.

Trail Information

Rating/Description
My book rates this trail as easy but I don't agree with that rating. I would say it is on the low end of moderate. The trail is rocky/bumpy most of the way to the top. Give yourself plenty of time and take it slow. In some areas the trail is steep with a few narrow sections that are on the edge. Most stock SUV type vehicles should have no trouble on this trail. Disclaimer: You need to decide for yourself if it is safe to make the trip in your vehicle. Note: ATV's are allowed, but there is no staging area at the bottom, so you must offload somewhere along the beginning of the trail.

Winter Months
There is a gate near the bottom of the trail, so they may close this trail in winter.

Time/Distance
The round trip trail is approximately 14 miles and should take about 3 to 4 hours driving time. You will also need to include time for finding the caches, exploring (make sure you check out the old log cabins along the route), sight seeing, lunch, etc. I suggest you have lunch at the summit where the last cache in the series is located.

Trail Waypoints
This route should be easy to navigate to the summit using the caches in the series as your intermediate waypoints. There is one extra waypoint provided with this cache for the start of the trail.

Have had this road on my radar for a hike (don't have an appropriate 4WD) for a couple of years & finally made it up today. I wandered around a bit but didn't spot the cache, then I remembered the name & there it was.

Out for a fun day checking out the trails and some caches. After going up Spring Creek, I thought I would run down Saxon and then back up to get some caches on top and head down towards Lamartine Mine. Plus, Saxon is best run in the daylight, now. Since the bad rains and some rockslides in 2013, I would say this trail should be rated as difficult.
Found this cache in great shape. Thanks!

Another DNF. We hiked up the 4wd road since we're not in a 4wd vehicle. Was a nice little hike, but couldn't find cache.
