A nice cache at the top of a mountain called "Eagle Peak". It's covered in black duct tape, and is not the one directly at the peak. Elevation is about 13,300 feet. It's quite the hike, so be prepared. This wonderfully difficult cache was hidden by a few staff of Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. However, I'm the only one who geocaches. It's a nalgine waterbottle wrapped in black duct tape. Great location for travel bugs and fun things of that nature. I'm telling ya, it's at the peak, so if you're experienced you'll be fine! If you're not, be warned. Easiest rout is to drive Ballman road to Rainbow Lake, and head up via the path in the trees to the left of the lake. Remember, you'll need a 4x4 vehicle and a pair of good shoes! If you meet anyone on the hike (such as Rainbow Trail Staff) have them help! Odds are they'd love to! Enjoy this cache, it's beautiful at the peak.
By the way, it's not the Nalgine placed by the rocky mountain club or whatever they call themselves (I don't truly remember).

06/27/2016 By WingsAndTales Wow fails to describe my day. I started early but not early enough for what I had planned. The drive to Rainbow Lake took longer than I expected. My Xterra did fine but it is so rocky and rough that it's slow going. I wouldn't try it in an SUV and a decent stock 4WD is probably the minimum. Once I got to the lake I headed up into the trees. I should have stayed closer to the lake and I missed the cairn that marks the start of the trail. I knew I would find it eventually but I'm sure I pissed off a lot of spiders as I destroyed their webs while thrashing through the trees. It was a beautiful hike after I found the trail and I loved the open ridge above treeline. I'm glad I brought the spoiler photo since my search would have been much longer without it. There is very little snow left on the peaks in the area.
My plan was to continue along the ridge and work my way around to UN 13123 and Cottonwood Peak. So much for plans. I started in that direction but then I got a better look at the rocky ascent to Thirsty Peak. I probably could have done it but it was going to take much longer than I thought and the clouds were starting to build. I made the tough choice to go back the way I came. I tried to skirt below the summit of Eagle but it rapidly became more work than just going back up and over on the ridge. There was a brief rain shower as I got close to the lake so I'm really glad I turned around. I didn't see another soul all day long. The only bad part will be having to drive that road again. TFTC
09/01/2014 By COpackrat Well, that was quite the little ridge walk... Came over from Cottonwood via UN 13,123 and Thirsty - the ridge was fine but the descent from Eagle was pretty loose. Thanks for the cache!
09/29/2013 By estes01 The wind was not a problem while we were still in the trees and the trail was beautiful. But holy smokes, once we cleared the trees all hell broke loose. Ernie66 weighs a lot more than I do, so what felt like 30 mph headwinds to him felt more like 50 for me. At times I had to crouch down and look for solid rocks to grab onto. I can understand why A & J – Adrift had problems finding the cache as there were so many good spots in all those rocks and they had snow to contend with too. The only thing that kept us searching was that RDAD’s log said the coords were good. The cache ended up earning its 5 terrain rating by where it was situated…I’m not crazy about drop-offs, but they never faze Ernie. Amazing views! This one deserves a favorite point. Thank you for bringing us up there.
09/29/2013 By ernie66 It's been 3 years, 1 month, and 4 days since the last find so estes01 and I met up this morning to make the attempt. When we did the caches on Cottonwood and the nearby unnamed peak, she swore she would never drive that road again...but the Eagle Peak cache kept calling and the only way to get it to stop was to go find it. It's 4.8 miles of very rough going that took us an hour. We could almost walk faster. What fun is that, though - there is already enough walking when starting from Rainbow Lake.
Given the last log, we were worried that the container might have been stolen by marmots, but we eventually found it a little closer to the cliff than our GPSr's indicated at first.
Did I mention the wind? Wow! Once we were out of the trees, it was an incredible effort to climb the ridge with a constant 30-40 MPH headwind. Great cache, though!
06/13/2013 By A & J - Adrift We searched for nearly an hour. But, we came up dry.
