Wilderness -- "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain ... an area protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions." —The Wilderness Act

Indian Peaks Wilderness is located in Roosevelt and Arapahoe National Forests, and encompasses 76,711 acres. It protects the spectacular mountain environment of serrated ridges and jagged peaks that straddle the Continental Divide between Rocky Mountain National Park and James Peak Wilderness. The wilderness became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System by a Congressional Act in 1978. Many of the peaks within this wilderness area were named for American Indian tribes of the west, and hence it’s name. Elevations within the wilderness range from 8,300 to over 13,500 feet. Seven mountains rise above 13,000 feet (the highest is North Arapaho Peak at 13,502 feet), and 35% of the land area within the wilderness is above treeline. Indian Peaks Wilderness has 28 maintained trails covering approximately 133 miles. Icy winds off the perpetual snowfields have created an environment near treeline of stunted trees and alpine flora that is unusual for this part of Colorado. Because of its location near the major population centers from Denver to Cheyenne, it is one of the most popular and heavily used Wilderness Areas in the United States. Enjoy your time here!

The cache is a small container hidden near the trail along its approach to a  Wilderness Area trail sign that marks its boundary. Because it is on the ground, it is infeasible to find the cache when snow is present.  I did not receive a consistent satellite signal at GZ, so am describing the hide location here.  With this description, a seeker will have no difficulty finding the cache.  Look for a very large, solitary boulder in the GZ vicinity.  The cache is hidden under a small overhang on the downhill side of this erratic.  It's covered by sticks and protected from downhill migration by a fairly good-sized rock.  Please re-hide it carefully at the same location.  The container is a 1-quart jar and contains a log sheet plus two pens.

Have fun on your hike from the trailhead to the cache; after finding the cache and signing its log sheet, consider continuing on the trail as it loops around the entire circumference of Monarch Lake.  The full loop is about 4 miles parking-to-parking, and involves gentle terrain.

A great cache, the best we have found so far. We left a trackable that originated in Germany that we found and brought from near our home in Michigan. We also threw in a plastic bug. There was a lot of interesting things in this cache, lots of fun to sift through. Tftc

Apparently the log paper is wet. I'd appreciate the next finder contributing to this cache by putting a new sheet of paper in the container, or by air drying the existing log paper. Thanks in advance for giving your assistance in maintaining this cache that so many cachers have appreciated. It will save me a trip.

We hiked this trail with our son many years ago. Was neat to finally make it back, but it sure is a lot more crowded these days. Glad to find this cache.

It started to rain pretty hard right when we got to the 1st big bridge and we went back to the car debating whether to wait it out. When the rain quickly subsided giving way to sunshine we decided to go for it. And I'm so glad we did! We did the whole loop and it was beautiful. We saw a moose munching on willow when we were about a mile from the cars by the avalanche area. Got great pics. Loved all the water crossings! Had the place almost all to ourselves. Amazing! Thanks for adding to the fun by placing this cache. And thank you for the hint. It was very helpful because too much scouring around that gz could have been slippery!
