Native American Tribes series.
Eyak

The Eyak are an indegenous group traditionally located on the Copper River Delta and near the town of  Cordova, Alaska. The Eyak initially moved out of the interior down the Copper River to the coast. There they harvested the rich salmon fishing grounds. When the Russians arrived they recognized the Eyak as a distinct culture and described their territory on their maps. They also traded with the Eyak and sent them missionaries. Because of their small population they were often raided and their territory boundaries were under pressure from the Chugach to the west. The Tingit, on the east side, had better relations with the Eyak and this led to intermarriage and assimilation of many Eyak. This pushed the Eyak's territorial boundary further west and contributed to the Eyak's decline. When the Americans arrived they started canneries and competed with the Eyak for salmon. This combined with integration with, and novel deseases introduced by non-native settlers led to the further decline of the Eyak. As populations decreased the remaining Eyak began to congregate near the village of Orca. In 1880 the population of the village of Alaganik was recorded at 117 and by 1890 it had declined to 48. In 1900 total population was estimated at 60. As more settlers arrived this last village became the town of Cordova. As of 1996 there were 120 living, partial Eyak descendents. The last full blood Eyak died on January 21, 2008.

The first geocache I found on purpose! Lasouthpaw has been after this one for a while, even told me some of the ways she tried to get it. We get there and she tells me where it is, and I'm like no way. But I decided to humor her and tried a few different ways before getting to the right spot. Whaddaya know, she was right. Thanks for the cache! (lasouthpaw signed for both of us)

I'd like to make an event tomorrow my 3,000th cache so I'm turning things up to get the finds I need. I've been out to this one twice before and have not been able to sign the log. The first time I spotted the container but I did not have the right TOTT with me. Another time I thought I had the right TOTT, and it was the right idea... but it didn't quite get me there. This time I came back with the best TOTT ever, one of my best friends. He kept telling me the cache wasn't there, but I insisted I could see it. My friend is pretty nimble and trusted me enough to make an attempt to grab it, maybe he just wanted to prove me wrong. He tried a couple ways and then gave in and used something I had with me. And what do you know, I was right. Yes! I got to finally sign the log! Thank you for the cache and the smiley! Find #2987.

Great hiding spot. Missed it the first time but received an additional assist from Mondo. Warning - Do Not Check the Base of the Light Pole nearby as it contains a Wasp Nest! The coordinates are nearly spot on - the “leg-up” from Mondo really helped to “boost” my confidence. Been loving the Native American series. Thank You.

DNF - After an hour of searching, I decided to try this another time. My GPS took me to within 5-6’ of a stop sign at a 4-way stop, in the middle of the road. So far, Mondo’s coordinates have been spot on with the rest of the Native American series so I checked the usual spots. I was met with a wasp nest at a light pole and decided I might try checking that spot again when I’m well armed. I also checked all four stop signs with no luck. There is a construction fence at one corner lot and obviously new construction performed recently to the rest of the area. I have a few days left in town so I may try once more.

Yeh, went here with dustyriver after the Hello 2018 event & he had the perfect TOTTs so we could make the grab. What better way to start the new year than getting this off my DNFs list! TFTH SL
