History:
Ohio City, previously known as Gold Creek and Eagle City, is
located at the confluence of Gold Creek and Quartz Creek. Ohio City
had more demises and re-births than most mining towns. In the early
1860's, gold gave Ohio City its start. No one bothered to find the
lode that was the source of the nuggets, so when the placer gold
ran out the town shut down. The 1879 silver boom brought miners
back to what was left of Ohio City. A sizable vein was found and
Ohio City was re-born. In 1880, Nicholas Meyers, a stock grower and
ranchman, built the first store in Ohio City. The silver boom
lasted until 1893 when the town collapsed again. In 1896, some
prospectors found the lode that was the source for the gold nuggets
from the 1860's. Ohio City was re-born again. Mining operations
continued until about 1916. Today, a number of the original cabins
and other buildings, including the original city hall, are still
standing.

Please take some time to reflect back
on the lives of these pioneers and the effort it took to make
Colorado such a great state!! The only guarantee in life is death.
Where will you be?
Colorado Spirit Quest
Information:
The Colorado Spirit Quest (CSQ) is a series of caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
"walked" before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in
the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series
will provide a history tour of these cemeteries. If you are
apprehensive about cemeteries, avoid this series.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It will
only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing
to place these caches. Each person that places a CSQ cache is
responsible for its maintenance.
New volunteers are always Welcome!! If you are
interested in being a part of this project,
email the owner of
Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Golden Mountain Passage.
