History:
On May 25, 1879, the first prospectors traversed Old Monarch
Pass and opened the Parole and Iron Duke Mines on Contact Mountain.
White Pine was founded in 1880 on the west side of Tomichi Creek in
a narrow gulch. By 1884, there was a population of over 1,000 and
the town boasted five stores, three saloons, two livery stables,
three hotels, a barbershop, meat market, and even a photographic
gallery. By 1885, the big boom had not occurred and White Pine had
a history of avalanches, most of them with fatalities. White Pine,
like other towns that based their entire economy on the silver
market, suffered the same fate after the crash of 1893. By 1894,
White Pine was deserted. Between 1902 and 1953, White Pine
re-emerged when the Akron Mines Co. drove the Akron Tunnel into
Lake Hill and mined lead, zinc and cooper during World War I and
World War II. Today, White Pine is a summer residence town in a
predominately ranching area.

The field of white crosses at the cemetery stands as a
testimony that our ancestors understood the meaning & value of
the cross.

Colorado Spirit Quest
Information:
The Colorado Spirit Quest (CSQ) is a series of caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
"walked" before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in
the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series
will provide a history tour of these cemeteries. If you are
apprehensive about cemeteries, avoid this series.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It will
only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing
to place these caches. Each person that places a CSQ cache is
responsible for its maintenance.
New volunteers are always Welcome!! If you are
interested in being a part of this project,
email the owner of
Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Golden Mountain Passage.
