History:
As early as 1874, settlers looking for precious metals were in the Crested Butte area. As the number of mining camps grew, Crested Butte thrived as a supply center and the town was incorporated in 1880. As the gold and silver played out, the mining of nearby high quality bituminous coal supported the economy. The coal mines and coke ovens were developed making the Crested Butte area the state's leading mountain coal operation by 1882. Since the major coal mines shut down in 1952, Crested Butte has become a tourist center for sightseers in the summer and skiers in the winter.

The cemetery is located in a spectacular setting with the rugged beauty of Mt. Crested Butte as a backdrop. Many graves are those of miners from the early days of Crested Butte. A cemetery reference map and directory are available in a box at the cemetery entrance.

Please take some time to reflect back on the lives of these pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state!! The only guarantee in life is death. Where will you be?

Colorado Spirit Quest Information:
The Colorado Spirit Quest (CSQ) is a series of caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have "walked" before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will provide a history tour of these cemeteries. If you are apprehensive about cemeteries, avoid this series.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches. Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

New volunteers are always Welcome!! If you are interested in being a part of this project, email the owner of Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Golden Mountain Passage.

Checked container. All is well.

Once again, the cache is not at any of the graves sites. Please do not move any rocks at any grave sites.

I didn’t want to disturb the tombstone. This cache could be hidden under so many rocks.

After a hike to the top of Mt. Crested Butte, which was fantastic, stopped to hunt for this cache. The group hunting for the cache included my wife and two other couples. Everyone helped and my wife found the container! Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.
