Large Ponderosa Pine
THE ENTERANCE
The falls are within the rocks.

Here it is – the moved, revamped, and resized Watson’s Falls Cache. Meangusto and I spent A LOT of time fixing up this cache with one goal in mind: We want this one to be in your top ten list of all time of favorite cache finds! It might be a bold statement, but we really think you will like this one for the challenge and scenery. If you would enjoy a nice hike, ending at a secluded, sun-lit cavern with an internal waterfall, come check it out!
Some things have changed in the two months since the first cache was placed – most significantly, the road back into Watson’s Park has been bulldozed and covered with obstacles. Too much mud-bogging led to its demise. But, don’t let this get you down, we found a great hiking route into the area with gorgeous views of the rocks near Devil’s Head and we saw lots of wild life – there are loads of elk in this area.

To the cache area: There are several possibilities to approach this cache, but all of them will require significant hiking of about 3 miles roundtrip. We suggest that the best starting point will be near the Jackson’s Creek Campground near Devil’s Head Tower.*** Park near a pull-off on Jackson’s Creek road at N 39 14.903 W 105 05.479 (this doesn’t require a fee). Hike S (back up the road) a short distance to N 39 14.841 W 105 05.511. Look to your left and you will see an old road/trail heading up the hill side to the E – follow this until you come to N 39 14.759 W 105 05.074. At this point go left and follow a trail that has basically been forgotten. It is marked along the way with pink and yellow ribbons and some cairns here and there, but be observant, the trail is faint. This will lead you to a one-track motorized trail – heading NE – take this trail until you come to what used to be a gravel road, which has now been bulldozed, etc... Go down the hill and cross the stream and head to the point: N 39 14.870 W 105 03.875. You will know that you are in the right spot when you see an ENORMOUS Ponderosa Pine tree. Supposedly, this is the biggest pine in Douglas County, CO. From there you should be able to spot the trail heading to the falls.

*** There are also several trails off of Rampart Range, between Old Dakan and Jackson’s Creek roads, which appear to lead into the same area. If you have a good map and want to try one of them let us know your success.

There are many ways to get near the cache once you have approached, but we suggest that the most adventuresome way will be to enter the rocks at a small cave: N 39 14.758 W 105 04.018 and hike/scramble your way up the falls among the large rocks. (See pictures). It will require some crouching and some minor bouldering, but NO ROPES required. You are looking for a yellow painted ammo can – a flash light might be useful in locating the cache, but it’s not entirely necessary. Be extremely careful if it has been or is raining on your hike – the moss on the rocks can be slick as meangusto found out the hard way!

Good luck and enjoy this beautiful area! Let us know if this makes your top ten traditional cache list and give some feedback on how to improve it.

 Hints

Look for a dead tree lying across the rocks – the arrows will point you in the right direction about 30 ft. away. Once you enter the cave, the search has begun!

Great spot but couldn’t find this one. There seem so be so many places it could be.

We had a fun time climbing the rocks and exploring the caves. We had an idea where it should be, but couldn't be found. Maybe one day we will try again.

Definitely hard to find but awesome location! My favorite so far. Cache is destroyed from water getting into the zip lock bags. Needs maintenance.

Beautiful cool day for a hike. Although we got very close, the rocks were too slick for our comfort because of the rain. We'll be coming back to try this one again soon. TFTC!

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! It did take us three seperate attemps but we finally got this one. Our first try was just plain unsuccessful. On our second attempt the cave was filled with ice (be sure to go after Memorial Day). On our third try there was a lot of celebration going on in the cave when we found it, but I am sure we didn't give away the location. There was nobody around for miles. The hike in from West Danken road seemed the best for us. It is a great hike and the huge pine tree is a must see. Thank you for the great adventure.

P.S. The cache needs some attention the box was filled with water and the log inside was destroyed. We left a blue carabiner attached to the top.

Really excited for this one today, but early afternoon storms had us turn back. Got as far as the 'trail with pink and yellow ribbons' (though saw no markers of the sort) took some time trying to keep on track with it in hopes of eventually finding the motor trail, then we heard the thunder rolling in. Turned around in good time and the rain started just as we got to the car. We'll be back!

It seems that folks have really appreciated this approach, so I'm going to re-post my prior log from September 2007, for easy finding:

"After my May 12th expedition, I was even more determined to succeed. I brought my father of The G-Crew along and as it turns out, we'd forgotten flashlights. No worries! Old Man G-Crew found it after 5 minutes of searching, even with his old-man eyes, and no flashlight!!

So, those who have tried and not found, it is still there and intact!

A less-strenuous trail: use an old off-road trail which begins on Dakan Rd. at N39° 14.828' W105° 03.393'. The trail heads slightly NW to N39° 14.983' W105° 03.718' when it bears toward the geocache. You'll pass the giant old pine tree, and continue around the point of the next ridge to the geocache. If you drive to this point, you will need to have a vehicle that can make it. With careful driving, even a Subaru can make it. You've been warned.

We removed the old Golden Corral certificates since they'd expired, and taken the "Plan Your Escape" caribiner. Left a free Laser Quest game (worth $15) which expires Oct 13th, 2007. So whomever gets there next, please take it and use it.

Thanks for the Cache!
- Flic"
