Kings Flat
Kings Flat is the flat grassy area to the southwest of the ghost town of Nevadaville, Colorado. The Flats is unique for Gilpin County in that it is a fairly large flat area. Most of the county is mountainous terrain with gulches and steep slopes. Nevadaville was very much a family oriented gold mining community. The school had a large student population relative to the size of the population. The Kings flat area was evidently left relatively open then, as it is today.
The citizens of Nevadaville, both school age and adults, used the flats to play baseball. During the heyday of the town (mid 1860s to 1920) baseball was the sport to play. There were organized regular teams for the youngsters of school age. The town had an adult team called the Nevada Stars, pictured below. Every community in the mining areas of Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties had a town team like the “Stars”. Central City by contrast had an actual baseball field with stands for the spectators as did Idaho Springs.
