You are looking for a 35mm film can in this reclaimed mine mill site.
The American Mill, associated with the American Mine up on adjacent London Mountain to the West South West, was once located here. Ore from the mine, located at about 12,100', was brought down about 800' by the use of an aerial tramway.

Mills were sometimes associated with just one mine or they may have served a larger number of mines in a small area. The purpose of a mill was to take the "chunks" of ore that the miners had brought out of the mine and turn it into a concentrate that was much easier to transport. A typical piece of ore would have some minerals in it mixed with worthless country rock. When you see tailings outside a mine entrance, what you are looking at is the worthless country rock. Similar tailings piles were found around mills.

Separation involved a number of processes, which processes would be determined by which mineral was being recovered. There was one constant. Ore always travelled from the top of the mill to the lower levels so that gravity could be used to help move the ore along. Usually the first step was to crush the ore. For this they used a stamp. Heavy weights that would be lifted and then slamed down on the ore would turn it to a powder. Stamps typically came in groups of 2, 5 or 10 and a mill could have multiple units. The insides of these mill were extremely noisy.

We can't believe we found it, but my wingman is the greatest. The search was fun and the area very interesting. The log was soaked so we added a strip of paper with our note on it and put both back. Thanks.
