“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other ‘Spirit Quest’ group. Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people. This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

When the Colorado Spirit Quest was announced, I started looking at topo maps online to see if maybe there might be references to forgotten cemeteries and single graves. I found a few. This one was near the site of Parkville on the Georgia Pass road. I had no idea what I would find when I checked it out. I didn't know if I would find anything at all, or if I would find a formal cemetery or perhaps something in between. This particular location was a real find.

We parked out on the Georgia Pass road and walked the 0.1 miles in over mostly flat terrain. The topo maps show a road to the cache location but it is blocked. You can park at the blockage and walk in but the distance is still about 0.1 miles. What we found when we got to the spot on the map was a very large and impressive marker that commemorates those early pioneers of the area who now rest here. A short search revealed 7 graves and all were marked by a simple outline of rocks and a cross made by crossed sticks on the ground. If you find more, please note the coords and any appropriate details in your log.

This cache exemplifies a great thing about geocaching - getting we the curious to off-the-beaten-path sites to see something interesting. Thanks for creating a cache here. Without it, we likely would never have tried to run down information on Parkville.

We wondered about this one a few times before finally spotting it. Very interesting spot that I definitely would have never stumbled upon if not for geocaching. Very cool spot.

Found while on our GeoWoodstock roadtrip. During our nine day, 3900 mile journey, we found caches in six states (including one new one), added 90 new counties, 39 virtuals, two Cache Across America caches, and the oldest caches in four states. Found with a bunch of fellow friends, reviewers, and lackeys as we wound our way up the mountain in a 13 Jeep caravan. Bumming a ride with maingray as well as Mr and Mrs Mtn-man. Thanks for the cache.

Wow, today was so much fun. Jeeped around here with 12 other Jeeps and soem great friends. I was driving "Blue" and there were some cool bumps to navigate. Huge thanks to the locals who helped out today, and got us there and back safe. My roomies were mtnman, mrs mtnman and allenite.
