Hydro-Electric Facility
Old Guard Shack
RR bridge -- Turn Here!!
Starting Point
Wooden Bridge

This cache is at 9155ft. The hike is only 0.6 miles, but the terrain makes it challenging. We took a group ranging in age from 6 years to 70 years. It took us about 40 minutes total time. Must be in good physical condition to make the climb. Bring your hiking stick and bug spray.
This cache is at the abandoned Roosevelt mine near Pitkin, Co.

Park at mile marker 12 on the SE side of the road to Pitkin. Start at the fisherman's trail (38 deg. 34.395' N; 106 deg. 33.183' W). Hike on foot from here. Follow the trail.

Go over a wooden bridge.

Continue until you arrive at an old hydro-electric building for mining along Quartz Creek. At this point, follow the trail upwards to the east.

Continue along higher trail that follows Quartz Creek.

Look for a broken-down wooden railroad bridge on the trail.
At this point you climb up about 40 yards to a level road above. This is the hardest part.

At the road, head south. Follow the road (it will switch back to the north). You will walk by an old guard shack.

Continue on until you come to the grand entrance to the Roosevelt mine. The cache is hidden here.

It is a clear rubbermaid container with a red lid. It contains various treasures. (pencil, Tigger, state pins, etc.)

Awesome place to visit. It was still cool, so bugs where still sleeping. I didn't know if i could make it, but these old legs made it all the way--80 years old and husband is 72 years, not bad for 2 old farts!!!!! Got a smiley and on to the next one down the hill. SL T4TH

The description and trail are still spot on, can't miss it. It was good to see the old pictures as many of the structures are decaying and no longer intact. Very cool location, I wish I knew more history on this mine. I'm sure there are many places like this up in the hills slowly disappearing. Thanks for keeping it alive.

Out caching with friends and we stopped for this cache because of the D/T and our interest in old mining. TFTC Favorite Point for sure.

High country caching with OF-Erad and Dustykat. Thanks to all the C/Os for placing these caches for us to find today...Although not nearly as difficult as the cache page and D/T ratings would make you believe, it was just another of the places I would have never known about had it not been for geocaching...TFTC SL
