Welcome to the Evergreen Outback! If you make it this far, you will find solitude far away from the maddening crowds swarming Maxwell Falls, every weekend, a few miles to the east. Cub Creek Trail connects with the Mt. Evans Wilderness trails to the north and Staunton Ranch State Park, to the south. This is the gateway to solitude - and a couple "lonely" caches in the wilds beyond (my "Black Mountain Fire" cache is less than a half-mile further, and the "North Fork Elk Creek Box" a mile or so south of that).

I placed the geocache about 400 feet off the trail. The forest is open and level, so the walk over is easy. However, I wandered off in the wrong direction after placing the geocache TWICE, so I've included a "trail" waypoint that I recommend you download, so that your re-connection to the trail is guaranteed.

Happy wandering!

Cache #2345! Phew this hike kicked our butts, but it was totally worth it to find the two more remote caches up here. This was a quick find after we made it in to GZ. I loved seeing all the crazy types of mushrooms on the forest floor. I really enjoyed this hike and adding smileys to the map was a good bonus. TFTC!

#2328 - Whew. Nice long uphill exhausting hike. This was a workout and we were out on the trail all morning. Great spot, nice cache, great hike. Thanks for placing.

It's been quite a few years since I hiked out here. I had 7.5 miles rt. Sweated on the way up, and was cooled off by light rain on the way back. Nice easy find once I reached ground zero. I did cover the cache (half way) with a rock - to deter animals from running away with the cache. I saw one runner, one hiker with a dog and one mountain bike rider. Then I drove by the Maxwell Falls trailhead and saw the overflowing parking lot with cars parked all over the sides of the road. More caches like this please! I'm giving it a favorite point. Thanks!

[FTF] # 78 @ 3:47! WOO-HOO! I absolutely love hiking this trail, and I'm lucky enough live less than a mile from the trail head. I hit the trail around 3 pm, and it was beginning to rumble and rained on and off for the entirety of the hike. I was still pretty sore from a long hike the day before, but the FTF adrenaline was pumping me up the trail. It's a little over 3 miles one way to the cache, and I only encountered two other people on the trail, which was a treat. After about 45 minutes of hiking non-stop I arrived at GZ, and had the cache in hand straight away. After stamping my name in Pole Position, I snapped a picture, dropped off a Travel Bug, and replaced as found.

This trail happens to have a couple of my favorite spots to forage for wild mushrooms. On the way back down I managed to find a few Orange Capped Bolete's and a nice big Oyster mushroom. They were cleaned and cooked for dinner, which was quite tasty. Also, for the second time this year in as many days, I was serenaded by my favorite birdsong from the Hermit Thrush! All in all it was a great way to spend the afternoon, and hopefully more people will come and visit this one, and the Caching Fire ammo can up top. One day hopefully soon, I'll make the trek out to the North Fork North Creek hide. Thanks to CO Wulff Pack for another quality hide in the hood! TFTC.
