Getting there is only by 4x4 or ATV which makes it a 4.5 difficulty. But once at the lake parking area, a nice 0.6 mile stroll slightly up hill.
Take County Road 162 off of US285 south of Nathrop,CO. 162 changes to FR211. A sign points to Hancock Pass (FR295. This is a jeep/ATV trail only, and most likely only passable in July through September. Listed as "Moderate" trail in the "Colorado Backroads & 4 Wheel Drive Trails" Book. You will come to the town of Hancock 1 building! Bear left on FR 295.2 and keep bearing left as there are several other trails forking off the road. about 6.5 miles you come to the parking area. Follow the trail through the bush to the lake, then let your GPS unit take over. You'll find a number of fun things in the ammo box that is stached in the bush and covered with a couple of small rocks. Once done, head back down the road to take a trip to the top of Hancock Pass. And if you want..head for the Alpine Tunnel geocache..well worth the drive.

Please take it easy on the trails and walk softly across the land....pack it in then pack it out!

My goal was to hike to the east Alpine Tunnel & Hancock Lake and log the 4 caches. This was my 4th & final one then it was back to the campsite for the 4x4 Grillin' Event clear over in Mushroom Gulch. Think possibly the difficulty & terrain and swapped on this cache as the find was easy once I made the steep hike up to the lake. I only have a small SUV so it was parked at the TH but plenty of folks were driving up to the end of this road. The walk from there is really only about .2 miles and well worth it.
