! The Exciting Cache Series!

“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”

REMEMBER:

If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

If you are interested in being a part of this project, contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of “Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mountain Passage”.  Use the ‘Send Message” link at the center of the page of their profile.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado.  This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task and will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers  willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

Thanks to the volunteers: Greasepot, Taylorgeotracker, Ivy Dog Parents, Team Boogity3, Grand High Pobah, Boborr 80909, Imusttravel2000, Buzz Lightyear I, Sandhill 49er, MrVolkswagen, Isisfan, Rockymtn8iv, Fork-L-Man, Outdrlvr201, Condor1, 2Cachedivers, arthurat, smilz787, Kyotmoon, Mountain Roamer, SugarPug, Team Tiger Pride, ernie66, drnetwork, Team w-bar-v, Dynamite Rabbit, DustyKat, mtnbirders, RustyBeerCan & Marma, grymreaper, nteclpr, Moose1 & Mama Moose, Joe Friday, 3cacheteers, 3cacheteers, Dasha Aussies, KB0UMW, hiking_fool, tripping, res71cue and 1Mrs1Ogre, and nickgatt, kingbee, The misgnoners, rbradu, shashyaz&foxy, Bugranger, Lyonden ut., Any Direction, Sewnssew, The Meandering Monkeys, Charlie-n-Geri, skibum1, gooftroop 4, stubywwjd, MaDDoGGaming, kingbee, Wolverine, Random Acts, lbmiller, BTBugs, God chaser, imcasey, lesslost2, Back Country Horseman, vorticity, Triggur, Eagle 2, imyy4u2, MikeAndJuli, and 9-rushman&famgirl79, TheBrecks, animjason, 3 Willams Kidz, RhyoliteRangers, and Indiandunes..

You are about to embark on a walking tour through Red Butte Cemetery.  In 1899 a group of Aspen citizens purchased 17 acres northwest of town and formed Red Butte Cemetery Association to serve the local community.  Since that time, a volunteer citizens board of directors has managed the cemetery’s services, including perpetual care of the plots and maintenance of the grounds.

Red Butte Cemetery and its beautiful property are community treasures, and the City of Aspen has recognized the property’s unique value with historic designation.  The cemetery houses markers dating from the 19th century, graves that were relocated to Red Butte after its creation.

As you tour the cemetery, you will no doubt recognize some names that are familiar to the history of Aspen. Take your time and enjoy this beautiful place!

The cache is not at the posted coordinates! Start your journey by taking the path to the left as you pass through the main gate, which is located at the S/W corner of the property. Head north about 150’ and look for the marker of “Firman Cerise”.  Subtract 2 from the day of his birth. This will give you the number for A.

Close by, you will see the marker for Cecile and Jeremie Gerbaz. Divide the year of Jeremie’s passing by 649. This will give you B.

Now continue north to the next path. Look for the “guy” with all the claws. Divide the day of David’s birth by 4. This will give you C.

Now,  look to the east for the beast with all the antlers. When you get there, you will see four large letters. Subtract the alphanumeric number for the 3rd letter from that of the 2nd letter. This will give you D.

Now, continue east until the path ends and take a right at the T. You are now heading south. Look for the “out of place” mammal. Add 2 to the month of Lynn’s death. This will give you E.

Continue south to the corner, take a right,  and head west back toward the gate. About halfway down, you will leave the path and head north amongst the markers. About 30’ off the path, you need to look for the marker of the “Potato King of Montrose”. Hint here, he may have been “ROYALty”. Look closely at the marker and find the year that he was proclaimed, “Potato King Of Montrose, CO”.  Divide the last two numbers of that year by 3. This will give you F.

Now, GO GRAB THE CACHE!!!!

N 39 12.ABC  W 106 50.DEF

Please just unscrew it from the cap. Do not detatch the hanger. Thanks!

If you have any comments or suggestions regarding this cache, please post them as a log rather than sending me an email message. If you need an additional hint, an email message is OK. Thanks.

Managed to find most of the information I needed online. A quick check on Google Earth confirmed a very likely spot. Cemetery still had 2-3' of snow on the ground. Cache container was in fine shape. SL. TFTC!

After 5 days of travel we are glad to be at the Condo, and enjoy a little rest from setting in the car! Going to go on a couple of small hikes and enjoy some of the Rocky Mountains trails and views, and learn a little history!! Thanks for placing!!
After grabbing some lunch we decided to take a drive up and see the Maroon Bells and enjoy the beautiful evening!! A great place, we walked part of the way around the lake, not sure how deep it is, but looks really shallow, but when you have water this clear, it is really hard to tell!! I know it has to be pretty deep in the middle, but sure doesn't look it!! Thanks for bring us to such a beautiful place! After seeing the Maroon Bells and Lake, we stopped by to grab this one, before it gets to dark, found all the answers after talking with a woman that walk in here every day, she also told us to watch all for the Momma Bear and her cub!! We where out before she came in!! Didn't want to be out of the car when she arrived, found cache and headed out!!

Perused the register book before solving the puzzle and recognized several local names. I've been around Aspen since mid 70s and never ventured more than 1 block down Cemetary Lane from 82 until today. TFTC.

Loved solving the puzzle... The 'beast with all the antlers' is currently not there and there is a tarp over the location.... Not sure if this is permanent or if it is temporary.
