Gelande Run is a double diamond ski run at Purgatory Ski Area (Durango Mountain Resort) in southwestern Colorado. It is seldom open for skiing because there is only a flat road for return to the Columbine lift area. Gelande Run looks down at a future day-skier base area.
Years ago, it was the site of the gelande ski jump competition (ski jumping using downhill skis).

The cache is an plastic can in a rock crevice. Note the difficulty for getting to this cache. The elevation is almost 9200’ and the hike is not for the faint-hearted. Good hiking boots and a hiking pole are highly recommended. The gallery photo of nearby aspen trees shows the slope of the terrain.

This cache is not accessible in winter due to snow cover. At other times of the year. be aware of afternoon thundershowers. Because of tall trees, let your GPS settle down in an open area, then use bearing and distance to approach the cache.

The initial contents are a large dime, rubber lizard and an electronic pedometer. There is also a Geocaching info sheet, log book and pencil and pen.

FTF gets the electronic casino game.

This is #6000 for me. I didn't want an ordinary easy cache for this milestone. At least when I started I didn't. Started to reconsider when I got halfway here. Parked at the end of a paved road about 500' away and spotted a nice trail. Good. About 150' away, I left the trail straight up the hill. That was tough and slippery in the light mist. Made it to what my GPS showed was it. Spotted a likely spot about 20' further up but searched where I was first. Got my phone out and it showed the likely spot up the hill so I scoot up there and make a quick find. Great shape and a great milestone cache for me. Had heavy rain driving up from Silverton, but it held off nicely here (mostly). Thanks.
