Takes more than an hour  Scenic view  Not Recommended at night  Abandoned mines  Not Wheelchair accessible  No Drinking water nearby  Medium hike (1km-10km)

South of Ouray, CO on highway 550, just north of Red Mountain Pass signage, take County Rd. 31 (4WD high clearance)to the east, go 2.1 miles on Co. Rd. 31 (watch for small green arrow signs. Park by abandoned building and there is a mine shaft directly to your right. Should be about 37-55.051N, 107-41.570W. Find old railroad right-of-way headed north and follow it to the turntable.
A shorter way in is to take Ouray County Rd 31 east from the north end at the bottom of the switchbacks on Hwy 550, go approximately 3/4 mi. to Guston Rd (there is a sign) and follow it to a parking area (N37- 55.270, W 107-41.417) and a sign that says Corkscrew Turntable .8 mi. and hike from there.
The historical society has put up some signs and information.

The cache is a small clear plastic jar with a blue lid and is under two big fir trees next to the turntable. It is not very obscured. Nice treasures.
The turntable was the only one of its kind in the Rocky Mountains and allowed the engine of the train to reverse directions in this short space. Check out the Ouray County Museum.

 Hints

If you take the longer way, finding the railroad right-of-way may be difficult -- a large fir tree has grown up in it and it is narrow-gauge.

We've been coming to Silverton since this cache was published and it's always been on my wish list to find. Finally got the chance today and was happy I finally did. Definitely a favorite cache and very well done. TFTC

Found this one while out exploring the area. We are up here from Texas on vacation. LOve looking around old things. So much to see but we were running out of daylight.

Out riding along the jeep trails looking at the old mines in the area today. Took the
.8 mile hike along the old railroad bed to the turntable. Cool site and gorgeous views. Cache hidden well and still in good shape. I sifted through everything in there and did not see a geocoin. SL TNLN TFTC

Just stopping here to leave a favorite point. This cache and the hike to it stands out as one of our favorite of all time. It's been four years or so since we found it, and it's still the one we tell all our friends about. Thanks again for such a cool experience!
