Many of the early settlers in the Tarryall Valley lived in one- or two- room cabins like this one as they “proved up” the western land they eagerly claimed under the Homestead Act of 1862. The 160 acres that settlers could claim under the act would have been plenty of land to raise crops and livestock back east, but it was seldom able to support a family in South Park, even in the good grassland of the Tarryall. Frequently a settler would summon his brother, sister, or even mother to claim adjoining homesteads so they could work together and expand their holdings. The owner of this cabin, Derby, also married into another family that had settled nearby, a common practice in the Tarryall that helped families work together to make a successful living in this high country environment.

The Derby Cabin is located just off County Road 77 (Tarryall Road). There is a small parking area in front of the cabin and the cache isn't far away. Use caution when leaving the cabin as traffic moves quickly on CR 77.

The Mixed Breed ver 2.0 (Sir Barney) and I traveled from St. Louis to Longmont to visit a friend who lives there. One of my goals (my friend is a muggle), was to visit Tarryall. So today we headed down that way. Of course, I couldn't just drive straight there when there were caches along the way so we stopped at a few. I tried to pick ones that might also interest my friend. This was one of our stops. Very interesting to read about this.
