Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America, at 14,440 feet, the highest of the 14ers in Colorado, and the high point of the Sawatch Range. It lies within the San Isabel National Forest. The mountain was named after Colorado statesman Samuel Hitt Elbert, who was active in the formative period of the State. Mount Elbert is the second highest mountain in the contiguous United States, after Mount Whitney in California.

"It took me nearly two years to get around to it, but I finally decided to tackle another of Colorado's 14ers. This time I went for #1, and I figured that the tallest peak in 48 states (all but CA and AK) deserved a geocache." ~ captain.ron (Original Cache Owner)

I, animjason, have since adopted this cache and it is an honor to keep this one alive. I have added some of my own flare to this page and hope you enjoy this cache. In addition to the Trailhead/Parking Waypoints, there is plenty of useful information on the 14ers.com site.

As 14ers go, this isn't a difficult climb, but make no mistake, it isn't a trivial undertaking either. There are several "easy" routes, but all of them involve hikes of at least 8 miles (Round-Trip) and elevation changes of at least 8,400 feet (Round-Trip).

"Once you reach the summit, first catch your breath, take in the beautiful views in all directions, and sign the peak log (along with all the muggles). As you sign the muggle log, you are about 75 feet North of the cache. The container is a medium Lock'n'Lock large enough for small trade items and trackables and contains a logbook and assorted writing implements.

PLEASE take this cache page along with you, and I strongly advise that you print out the photos and take them as well. I believe that there's plenty of information here to enable you to find this cache even without a GPSr, but of course, it won't do you much good if you don't have it with you. I'm really unhappy when someone makes this climb and then logs a DNF, so please do us both a favor and come well prepared for this one." ~ captain.ron

The hide is very easy, especially with the attached photos. PLEASE put it all back correctly so that the cache remains hidden from muggle eyes. Thank you and have fun!

You will probably not be alone on the summit, so believe it or not, some stealth will likely be required to safely retrieve and return the container. The cache is adjacent to the trail and it is fairly close to one of the Benchmark Reference Discs as well so a great "cover story" is that you're looking for the Benchmark if someone asks :)

"If this is your first Fourteener, then congratulations! And whether it's your 1st or your 54th, please feel free to include your no-doubt spectacular photos with your logs." ~ captain.ron

I love two-fers so don't forget to look for Mount Elbert's Benchmark as well.

Got to the top. Weather wasn't too great, but we just had to find the cache. Searched high and low and finally found it. GPS was pointing into the ice field, so felt lucky we could even sign it. Replaced cache where we found it. Thanks for the fun!

Amazing early morning hike up to Colorado's highest mountain. I reached the summit at 08:04 and found the highest cache on Colorado. Thank you for the cache.

Perfect weather to hike up to another state highpoint. Brought my titanium ice axe, my photo prop for every state highpoint.
Clouds turned dark right after I summitted.

Our 2nd cache of the morning. We flew to Colorado yesterday morning for the long weekend to hike and summit some 14ers. We are using the Leadville area as our basecamp for hiking adventures over the next few days. This morning, we arrived at the north Mt. Elbert trailhead and set off at 4:45 a.m. and set off down the trail in darkness with our headlamps. We are still acclimating to the elevation, so the climb was a bit of a struggle, but we made it up to the summit in 3 hours. This was our 39th state highpoint.

After taking some photos, Scout was getting cold and began to make her way down. Finance Guy stayed at the summit to search for the cache. Thought I found it once only to realize it was something left by another hiker. Eventually, I spotted the cache after a 5-10 minute search. During this time, I was the only one on the summit. The sun was peeking out, but it was a bit cold and breezy. Many thanks for the hide and the amazing views.

9:54:00 AM My wife and I are from Dallas, staying in Divide, CO for our traditional August vacation to beat the Texas heat for a couple of weeks.

Today is a bucketlist trip for me to Mt. Elbert. I've had this on my geocaching "To Do" list for over 4 years. Our first week here was spent with my siblings and their families, so I didn't plan any big geocaching quests. As a consequence, I was not expecting to have the opportunity to make the trek. Yama Gypsy happened to memtion that she and Lemonheadmafia were going to make this hike today and they allowed me to join them. They even outfitted me with camping gear for the night before. It was also fortunate that we had great weather (aside from the haze of the forest fires).

We traded some notes and came up with a plan. We started from the Mt Elbert North trailhead a few minutes after 0400 and finished at the Black Cloud trailhead at 1611. My patient wife picked us up and shuttled us back north, where we broke camp.

The hike was tiring, but I'll never forget the experience. Even with cellphone mafunction at the summit, I still managed to get a few good pictures before and after that point.

This is it. The purpose of the quest. (This is my seventh "highest cache in the state" find - and the highest of them all by a wide margin.) I am so very glad that Yama Gypsy spotted this one. Whew!

We signed the log and took some pictures at the summit with a passed around cardboard sign. Thanks, animjason, for the cache. I'm happy to add my favorite point to the pile

w00t - by amazing coincidence, this is my 1400th find. Our group hiked the Black Cloud route, which was very scenic, but it was a long time around 14k feet. We saw grouse, a broad-winged hawk, and lots and lots of pika. It was a wonderful day, but there was haze from the western wildfires that made the far mountains appear as dim shadows.

Maybe technically South Peak isn't a 14er, but I say hike the Black Cloud and traverse it twice on the way to Elbert and then tell me it doesn't count as a peak. lol Also, the photo wallpaper for this cache page is of South Peak, not the high point of Elbert.

Once we finally reached the summit we took a break to enjoy the views, eat a snack, and get some pictures. The summit was only halfway for us. We were hiking down the southeast ridge on the blackcloud trail. Once we were ready to start the descent we located this cache. Cleaned it out a bit, most of the notes and moldy logs to ensure the container would fasten securely. Sl, thanks!

What an adventure and a half! Started at 3:30, summited (the first time) at 7, and found this cache after about 25 min of searching. Coords are good! I was looking for the rocks as in the spoiler pic, but they aren't stacked like that anymore! Thankfully, a corner of the cache caught my eye just as I was about to give up. At 7:30, the real adventure started...I misjudged the clouds nearby and thought I could easily continue along the south ridge for the other caches as the nearby clouds blew over (only 1 of the 4 weather reports I saw had precipitation starting in the morning). I re-summitted just after 11 (after approximately a 4 mile detour), having survived 2.5 hrs of rain & hail and 1.5 hours of snow and crazy wind. I was so happy to get off the mountain alive - there were some real moments of reckoning, realizing that I was alone...in a snowstorm...on the highest peak in the state...on a side trail! All's well that ends well. Thanks for placing this cache!

I was just leaving the summit of Mount Elbert and spotted it off to the side. I was so excited to make finding a cache park of my first 14er experience. Thanks for the cache!!
