The land that is now Colorado has undergone many changes since an inland sea once covered South Park. Ancient mountains rose and wore down again and at one time this land was tropical and filled with giant trees and lush forest plants. About 35 million years ago, a blast of hot magma exploded up through a volcano made up of mountains we now call Thirtynine Mile and Black Mountains. The material spewing from the volcano buried, yet gently preserved, the trees, flowers, and even insects in the area. The result can now be seen in the detailed fossils at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in nearby Teller County.

Go south from Hartsel on highway 9 and turn left on County Road 116 (Black Mountain Road). Park on the road when you get close to the cache. Continue down the road for some fantastic views of South Park.

On our way to cache Delorme pages we don't have in Colorado. Cache was right where it should be, but the lock & lock container had disintegrated to the point of being litter. The adventure from the road to the cache was not so great as to prevent us from hiking to the GeoSuby to search our field-repair gear for a suitable replacement container. We had no lock & locks, so we put the salvageable logs and treasures from the original into a sturdy, weather-resistant tin of similar size to the original container and re-hid as found. SL. TFTC!

Had to wait for rain and hail to quite on this one before we grabbed it. No code on container. Working on some more of the CSP series with Wall77, Ghostiegal and KSgator. We started it Monday, but got run out of the area by the fires. Roads were closed so we could not get to the caches. Most of the roads were open today, but we still could not get to some of them. Signed log WOGG. TFTC
