This cache is placed for those cachers that are looking for a little more challenge. The cache is actually sitting in the forks of an old Juniper tree in plain sight. It's the part in between the parking area and the cache location that gives it a 4.5 terrain difficulty. I wouldn't recommend bringing small ones to this one, some bouldering, chimneying, general rock scrambling, stumbling and steep up-hill hiking is involved. For the past year-and-a-half, I've been telling Tink that "one of these days I'm going to climb up to that pinyon tree and put a cache up there. For the past year-and-a-half I've heard the same response, "Please just do it so I don't have to keep hearing about it". Little does Tink know, now every time we go to Grand Junction, I can tell her "You know, I have a cache up there by that pinyon tree".
Just to give you some scale, the pinyon tree is actually about 18' high and about 6-8' around. It sits just about on the edge of the rim, making it very visible from the interstate below. After placing the cache, I hiked on up to the top of the ridge and found evidence of wild horses in the area: hoof prints and piles of exhaust. There were also a covey of quail, just to the west of the top. If you decide to go to the very top, you will see one of man's greatest scars upon the earth. Please do not describe it in your log notes, let the next cacher be just as suprised or dejected.
There are probably many way to get to this cache. I chose to park in the parking area along I-70, East bound lane (N 39* 14.597', W 108* 15.320. As far as the trail to and from, there is none!. I scaled the front side and spine most of the way. On the way down, I did come down the drainage to the west of the very top. Not so good. Lot's of down trees and heavy brush to crawl around and through. Oh yeah, DON"T forget your camera, like I did. Great veiws of the whole North Winter Flats/Deer Park areas! Have fun, watch your footing and check for ticks when you get down :0)
CONGRATULATIONS to lil bear 1 & 2 for the FTF and the other three that chased them up there. Sounds like you were all within minutes of each other and may not of even known it!
08/22/2014 By Rojo464 Stopped by this cache on my way to Rifle for a job. Everytime we drive along here I say to Mrs J "one of these days I'm going to climb up to that pinyon tree and find the cache up there". Today I did it. TFTC Incredibly beautiful views from the cache.
07/27/2013 By c.carley.a This was a great hike. Making it up the cliffs was a bit hectic but well worth it once I made it to the top!
07/14/2013 By A1tree OMG what a hike! I probably shouldn't have tried this one after work, but I was getting tired of driving right by it everyday! So let's see... 4 hrs of sleep last night, worked 12hrs today, middle of July, 5:30 in the afternoon, yeah that sounds like the perfect time for this cache. I sure was regretting my decisions today about half way up...
